SANITARY CLOSET.
Application led September 20, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that EVAN J. OWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gadsden, in the county of Etowah and State of Ala4 hama, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Closets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in sanitary or dry closets, and has for its object to provide such a device which is extremely simple, strong, durable and convenient in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a closet which will be entirely sanitary, and free from the odors usually arising from such closets.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure l is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, and,
Figure 2 is a plan View of the closet.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout, the numeral 5 designates the riser of the closet. The riser is provided near its bottom with an annular flange 6. Ears or lugs 7 are fo-rmed at the top of the riser, and a top 8 is carried by the top of the riser, and is held thereon by screws 9, engaging the ears 7. This method of securing the top to the riser gives a substantial lit, with small chance of any odors escaping through this joint.
The top 8 is provided with the usual opening 10, which is covered and uncovered by a lid ll, suitably attached to the top S by hinges l2, as is customary. This lid ll may be of a self-closing type, so that when the closet is not in use, the opening l0 will be covered to prevent odors escaping. A stack 13 has communication with the interior of the closet, for conducting the odors to a fl distant point. The stack carries a flange 14 which is attached to the top 8 by screws. It will be observed that the construction so Specification of Letters Patent.

far presented, provides a very sanitary closet, and one which avoids the obnoxious odors usually arising from closets. The riser 5 is preferably made of cast iron, but it will be apparent that the same may be constructed of concrete. The top 8 is made of wood or any other suitable material.
The bottom of the riser including the flange 6 is embedded in a slab of concrete l5, which constitutes the top of a reservoir, such as a cast iron boX loa. The flange 6 is spaced from the lower edge of the riser so that the concrete lies both above and below it. Thus a tight joint is secured without the use of bolts. It has been found in the construction of closets of his type where bolts are employed that the constant presence of moisture rapidly rusts said bolts and the joints become leaky and the odor escaping' therefrom becomes offensive. spacing the flange G from the lower edge of the riser, the concrete is caused to both overlie and underlie said flange. Thus the riser is securely anchored to resist tipping and to support the weight of the user.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, but it is also to be understood that various changes in the shape, size, and, arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
A closet of the character described comprising a tubular riser open at top and bottom, a seat spanning the top thereof, a reservoir, a concrete slab constituting the top of said reservoir andan external flange on the riser which is spaced from the lower edge thereof and is embedded in the concrete of the slab at such point that the con-- cretewill lie both aboveand below lsaid ange.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
EVAN J. GIVEN.
