Be it known that I, GLEN G. SrnoK, a

"citizen of the United States, and resident of Portland, in the county of Multnoinah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pins, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pins and more particularly to the retaining means there- An important object of the invention is to provide a pin having novel means whereby the pin may be held against displacement or accidental withdrawal from a piece of cloth or other material in which it is inserted.

A further object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the improved pins may be readily and securely grasped when it is desired to remove the same and break the locking engagement between the pin and the cloth or other material to which it is attached.

A further object is to provide a pin which is neat in appearance, of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi- .ment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the shank of a pin, the shank having its forward portion tapered as indicated at 10 so that the pin may readily be inserted through such material as several pieces of cloth 20 and 25.

As illustrated in the drawing the rear portion of the shank 5 is provided with a head 37 having its rear surface rounded in the usual manner and one side fiat as indicated at 63. The fiat side 63 is flush with one side of the shank 5 and forms a convenient means whereby the head may be gripped by the finger tips when it is desired to remove the pin from the pieces of the cloth 20 and 25.

In order that the shank 5 might be held in position, I have provided the rear portion of the same with a substantially triangular shaped barb 72 having its rear portion terminating at the rear endof the shank 5 to provide a shoulder 76 which engages the cloth and thereby prevents the accidental withdrawal of the shank. As illustrated in particular in Figure 2 the shoulder 7 6 is inclined inwardly toward the shank 5 so that the material engaged by the shoulder will not accidentally slip off the same and permits the shank to be accidentally withdrawn. In other words, it might be said that the rear portion of the barb 72 is slightly pointed to provide a means for engaging the material and preventing the accidental loss of the pm.

The outer edge of the barb 72 is curved longitudinally and is joined with the side of the shank where it merges into the shank so that the pin may be inserted without effort on the part of the operator.

In operation the shank 5 of the pin is inserted through the material in the manner illustrated in Figure 3 and when the pinreaches the limit of its movement the barb 72 is engaged with the material. The contact of the inwardly inclined shoulder 76 with the material prevents the pin from being accidentally withdrawn. Since the part of the head adjacent the barb is fiat, the head does not interfere with the engagement of the shoulder with the material.

A pin constructed in accordance with this invention may be cheaply manufactured and by reason of the presence of the barb 72, the pin is effectively held in place. The improved pin may be made from a single piece and may be used the same as the ordinary D111. It will be observed that the flat side of the head contacts with the material and there by prevents the rotation of the shank. By thus preventing the rotation of the shank the barb is at all times held in engagement with the material, thereby preventing the withdrawal of the pin.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A pin comprising a shank having its rear portion provided with a head flattened on one side, and an anchoring device formed on said shank.

2. A pin comprising a shank, a head formed on said shank and having one side flattened, and a triangular barb formed on said shank at the flat side of said head, and having its rear end formed with an inclined shoulder.

3. A pin comprising a shank, a head f orined at the rear end of the shank, and a.

barb formed at the rear portion of said shank and having its outer edge curved 1ongitudinally, said head being provided With means to hold the shank against rotation.

4. A pin comprising a shank, a head formed on the. rear end of the shank having one side flattened, and a barb formed on the shank at the flat side of said head.
