IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWMENS BOOTS.
Specification forming part of- Letters Patent No. 142,061, dated August 19, 1873; application filed I June 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AARON G. WALKER and SAMUEL BROWN, both of the city and county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Plowmens Boots; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side view of one of our said boots. Fig. 2 represents an opposite side view of the same boot. Fig. 3 represents a back view. Fig. 4 represents a front view of the boot. Fi 5 represents side views of the lapel and back pieces before they are sewed together; and Fig. 6 represents a side view of the upper before it is united to the parts shown in Fig. 5, a portion of one side being shown broken away.
To enable those skilled in the art to which our invention belongs to make and use the same, we will proceed to describe it in detail.
The nature of our invention consists in the combination of certain peculiarly-cut pieces of leather, whereby an enlarged or bulged part is formed in the leg to give room for the action and free motion of the ankle-joint, while the top of the boot-leg is contracted to fit around the ankle and yet permit the easy and convenient drawing on and OR of the boot.
In the drawings, the part marked A represents the upper of the boot and front part of the boot-leg; B, the back of the boot and bootleg; 0, the lapel, the narrow end a of which clasps the back of the boot leg B, and is buckled to the outer end I) of strapD, the other end of strap D being fastened to the edge of the back piece B.
The parts A, B, and (3 are first stitched together before being secured to soleE and heel.
F. In stitching the parts A, B, and 0 together the edge 0 of the lapel-piece is stitched between the edges (1 and e of the partsA and B at the point f of the part B, and the edge 9 is stitched to the side of the piece B; while the edges 19 and 7c of the pieces A and O are only stitched together from the point f upward, thus leaving the leg open that distance, when the other edge m of the upper A is turned round and stitched to the edge a of the back piece B. I
It will thus be seen that, by the peculiar cut of the edges cl, n, k, and m-the two latter being of the same shape-when they are sewed together to form the leg, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, an enlarged part, G, will be formed for the ankle joint, while the leg is narrowed in to fit the ankle above the joint, and that thereby a plowmans boot is produced which can be easily drawn 011 and off, owing to the fact that the edge 11 of the back B is left unstitched; while, when the strap ends a and b are buckled together, the top of the leg will be drawn in to fit the ankle, as shown at H, while the enlarged part G allows an easy and free play to the ankle-joint.
We prefer, in order to have the edges d, 7:, and m uniform and alike on both sides, to first crimp the leg, and then cut the back of the upper to form said edges.
Having described ourimprovements in plowmens boots, what we claim as new and of ourinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture,
A plowmans boot, the edges d, 0,12, 70, m, and n of the parts A, B, and G of which are cut in the peculiar form and stitched together, as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
AARON G. WALKER. SAMUEL BROWN.
