Description

6.. WINKLER- MOLD FOR CASTING STEREOTYPE PLATES.
APPLICATION map JULY 30. 1 921.
Patented June 20; 1922 UNITED STATES CARL WINKLER, 'OF IBERN'E, SWITZERLAND.
MOLD FOR CASTING STEREOTYPE PLATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1922.
Application filed July 30, 1921. I Serial No. 488,635.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41STAT. It, 1313.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL IVINKLER, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, residing at Bernc, in the Swiss Republic, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molds for Casting Stereotype Plates (for which I have filed an application in Germany September 5, 1919), of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a mold for casting stereotype-plates having a water mantle for cooling the back of said plates. According to my invention I divide the water mantle into two chambers by a partition wall, and lead th water (preferably on the side of the form opposite to that on which the molten metal is poured in) firstly into the inner or lower chamber, so that it will cool the wall of the mold adjoining the back of the plate and then pass into the outer or upper chamber on the other side of the partition wall, from which it can escape by overflowing.
By this arrangement I prevent the cold water from mixing with the water of higher temperature, so that a maximum cooling effect is obtained on the back of the plate. Moreover, on cutting off the supply of water,
the wall adjoining the back of the plate,
will be better able to attain the desired temperature for the next casting because the quantity of water in the outer chamber is restricted.
In the drawing my invention is illustrated by way of example:
Fig. 1 is a section through a mold designed for casting curved plates, and
Fig. 2 a section on AB in Fig. 1.
The mold consists of, thebed I) having a water mantle a, if desired, and of the core 0. d is the matrix lying in the bed I; and
preferably held at one edge only, the other edges being more or less loosely guided.
The water mantle of the core 0 1s provided with the partition wall 9 at some little distance from the wall it of the core. Said partition wall divides the interior of the core into two chambers is, Z, with the inner one (Z) of which the water main '5 is connected. On the other side of the core an opening 9 is provided in the wall 9, through which the water coming from the pipe 2' and passing through the inner chamber Z enters the outer chamber is, from which it escapes through the pipes m.
The cock n is only opened immediately after a plate has been cast. When the plate has been sufficiently cooled the cock 9% is closed again, whereupon the water in the inner chamber Z is heated by the heat of the cast plate, and the wall it is thus raised to th temperature required for casting the next plate.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A mold for casting stereotype plates having a water mantle divided by a partition into inner and outer chambers communicating with each other through an opening in the partition at one side of the mold, the outer chamber having an outlet and the inner one having means for admitting cold water thereto at the side thereof opposite the opening in the partition.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
C. WIN KLER.
