GAS BURNER.
Application filed August :25, 1919. Serial no. 819,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF BELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin gas-burners, and particularly to a gas-burner of the type particularly adapted for use in connection with water heaters, although the burner may be employed in connection with other structures. a
Burner-plates heretofore employed in gas burners of the type to which my invention relateshave been made of very frail material, usually wire gauze, or very thin perforated plates, and considerable trouble has been caused by the employment of these frail burner-plates, due to distortion caused by corrosion and heat acting upon this frail material, thereby permitting back-burning orback-firing.
An object of the present invention is to provide a strong durable and efiicient burnerplate for gas-burners of this class; a burnerplate of such a character as to prevent backfiring or flashing and one that may be readlly applied to and removed from the burner structure.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an application of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a burner constructed-in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional'view;
Fig. 3, a top plan view of the burnerplate; and
Fig. 4, a detail view showing the character of the material employed in making the burner-plate.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the burner; this body is hollow and is, formed at its lower end with an open flared portion having means 2 for enga ing a gas supply pipe, not. shown. Gas an air enter the lower end of the burner and are mixed in a passage 3 as is usual in this class of burners. 1
The upper portion of the body is enlarged to form an annular discharge chamber 4, the interior face of the wall forming said chamber 4 is provided with an annular.
shoulder or ledge 5, said shoulder being spaced a slight distance-inwardly from-the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20,1922.
Secured to the upperend of the body is a cap-plate 7 said cap-plate is formedwith an annular face 8 designed to rest upon the annular edge or face of the body and is detachably secured thereto by bolts 9 passed through apertured lugs 10 and 11 formed respectively on the body and cap-members. The front wall of the cap-plate is extended laterally at its upper end, as shown by the numeral 12, and this portion is provided with slots or passages 13 through which the products of combustion pass. The cap-plate, as illustrated,'is formed with a forwardly projecting slightly inclined portion 14 located over and adjacent to the passages 13, and with rearwardly projecting portion 15 extending over and protectin the joint between the cap and body mem ers. The construction described forms an annular chamber 16 in the cap-plate, corresponding with the annu-. lar discharge member of the body.
A characteristic and important feature of the present invention is the burner-plate 17. As illustrated and as preferred, this burnerplate includes a flat strip a of suitable material, such for example, as copper, brass or nickel, and a corrugated crimped or roughened strip 6- of similar material. These strips are wound one upon the other to produce a circular structure having a great number of substantially uniform small orifices. The width of the strips should be sufficient to provide, when assembled, a body of some thickness or depth. I find that such a body provides against back-firing or back-burning, and is of such a character that it will not be distorted by heat and is strong and durable.
For maintaining the strips in assembled position and for the purpose of positioning the burner-plate on its seat within the body member of the burner, I provide an openwork casing including a ring or band portion 0 having an upper annular outwardly projecting flange d, and a lower inwardly extending flange e, and a cross-member. f. This band and cross-member are preferabl formed from a single piece of sheet meta Cross-member f, as shown, is made with an Opeling. 9 through which a split rivet h exten s.
Other means may be provided for mainthose shown, and the strips may be difl'erently arranged and more than two strips emgloyed in forming the burner-plate without air and gas mixing bod :portion having a ischarge chamber inc med thereto and,
formed with a circular wall opening, a deice for preventing back-firing comprising structure formed of flat and corrugated strips of metal wound upon each other to roduce a circular structure, said structure isposed in said chamber and supported by portion and a slotted laterally extending portion in advance of he chamber and the bearing, and means for securing the cap- .plate to the body-portion.
In testimony'whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADOLF BELER.
