LESLIE M. ADAMS, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
GAME APPARATUS.
Application filed AprillG,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE M. ADAMS, a; citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in game apparatus and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character embodying surface traversing members, and it is an object of, the invention to provide a novel and improved apparatus of this general character which, in addition to affording amusement, will require skill and thoughtin its play.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a novel and improved apparatus of this general character in simulation of war and wherein provision is made for certain penalties whereby the exercise of thought and care is required.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved apparatus of this general character embodying a playing field provided with series of alined stations with the stations of one series staggered with respect to the stations of adjacent series and wherein certain of the stations are connected by a line or path of travel to determine the movements to be made by the surface members or playing pieces.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimedQ In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of an apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with the surface members or playing pieces in position to start the game;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with the surface members or playing pieces omitted;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of one of the surface members or playing pieces;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the second surface member or playing piece; and
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of a third surface member or playing piece.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 20, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 461,878.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes aboard or member of desired configuration and which is provided with a flat playing surface. Defined on the upper or flat surface of the board or member B by the lines L is a playing field F, said playing field being substantially square.
Extending along and within the playing field F are the stations S, said stations being divided into series with the stations of each series in alinement and the stations of one series staggered with respect to the stations of adjacent series. The stations S in alternate series, as herein disclosed, are eight in number while the number of stations S in each of the remaining or intermediate series is seven so that in the complete device one hundred and thirteen stations S are provided with one of said stations substantially'centrally located with respect to the field F.
In the present embodiment of my invention, three series of stations S at opposed side portions of. the field .F comprise a home or line with alternate stations S in the fourth series also comprised in said home or. line and the central station of the fifth series also included in said home or line.
These home or line stations S may be colored black or with other identifying color while the'remaining stations S, or those stations between the homes or lines, are identified by a different color, as green, said intermediate or interposed stations being defined as no mans land I Theouter or rear series of stations] S in each of the homes or lines is divided into pairs with the stations of each pair connected, by a path of travel or line 1. The
vrear or outer series of stations S of each home or line containsthe maximum number of stations,- namely, eight. i
The end stations of thealternate series of stations S comprising the maximum number of stations are connected by the paths of travel or lines 2, the end stations of the rear or outer series of one home or line so connected being remote from the correspondingly connected end station S in the rear or outer series of the second home or line.
Adjacent stations S are connected by the diagonally directed pathsof travel or lines 3 except certain of the adjacent stations S comprised within no mans land, such disconnected stations affording. the spaces 4: which provide penalties to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
The surface members or playing pieces are fifty-four in number and divided into two sets, each set comprising twenty-one members or pieces 5 to be identified as privates by the letter P arranged thereon, three pieces 5 identified as oflicers by the letter 0 arranged thereon, and three pieces identified as torts 5 by the letter F arranged thereon. The members or pieces of one set are differently identified from the members or pieces of the second set and which differences in identity may be obtained by having the members or pieces of one set of one color and the members or pieces of the second set of a different color.
In playing the game, each set of pieces is arranged within its home or line With the officer pieces or members 5 arranged in front and the fort pieces 5" surrounded by the pieces 5 or the pieces 5 and 5. The object of the game is for the members or pieces of one set to capture at least two forts of. the second set or one fort and all oil the pieces 5 and 5.
l/Vhenthe various pieces 5 are within their homes or lines, it is permitted to move the same inany direction upon the paths 1 and 3 but the pieces of each set can only be moved forwardly on the paths or lines 2 or on the paths or lines 3 leading to a station S Within no mans land. The ofiicer members or pieces 5 andthe fort pieces or members 5 can move in any direction upon all of the paths or lines 1, 2 and 3.
In playing the game, the players alternately move one of their members or pieces I y! o, 5 or o from one station to an ad acent station along a path or line 1, 2 or 3, but it is not compulsory that'one player take up or capture the member or piece comprised in the set of his opponent and which would be permissible in the event a member or piece of one set can be moved to a station occupied by a member or piece comprised in the set of his opponent.
Any player Who moves a member or piece 5, 5 or 5 across a space 4-, and which space may be identified as a submarine zone, forfeits this member or piece. Only a fort piece 5 can capture a similar piece of an opponent but any one of the pieces 5 .or 5
may capture or seize a fort by jumping thereover.
It is to be understood that in the playing of the game with my improved apparatus, other rules of play may be adopted as the special feature of the present, invention is the arrangement of the various stations S and the coacting paths or lines 1, 2 and 3.
I claim:
1. A game board having stations arranged thereon, said stations being divided into series with the stations of each series in alinement, the stations of adjacent series being staggered, and diagonallines connecting certain of the stations, the remainder of the adjacent stations being disconnected, the end stations of certain of the series being conneeted by a line, one of, said end stations being in a rear series at one side of the board and a second of said stations being in the opposite rear series at the opposite side of the board.
2. A game boardhaving stations arranged thereon, said stations being divided into series With the stations of each series in alinement, the stations of adjacent series being staggered, and diagonal lines connecting certain of the stations, the remainder of the adjacent stations being disconnected, the rear series of stations having pairs of station s connected by a line, the end stations of certain of the series being connected by a line.
3. A game board having stations arranged thereon, said stations being divided into series with the stations of each series in alinement, the stations of adjacent series being staggered, and diagonal lines connecting certain of the stations, the. remainder of: the adjacent stations being disconnected, thev rear series of stations having pairs of stations connected by a line, the end stations of certain of the series being connected by a line, one of said end stations .being in a rear series at one side of the board and a second of said stations being in the opposite rear series at the opposite side of the board.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
