RING-GROOVE CLEANER.
Application filed October 24, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUDIE E. VVEDDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Jackson and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ring-Groove Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for. removing carbon from internal combustion engines and aims to provide a tool which is especially adapted for scraping the packing ring grooves of the engine pistons.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool which may be slipped over the piston so as to surround the groove, the said tool carrying one .or more cutters which project within said groove for contact with the walls thereof, the tool being reciprocated by the piston to effectually remove all carbon.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustratcd in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of a piston with the tool in position.
Figure 2 is a view showing the piston in horizontal section and the tool in plan view, a portion of the tool being broken away.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts. the reference character 10 indicates the piston of an internal combustion engine, which is'provided with the usual packing ring groove 11.
The purpose of thepresent invention is to provide a tool. for the removal of carbon deposits from the packing ring grooves of the piston and for this purpose there is provided an annulus 12, which has extending therefrom oppositely located handles 13 for convenience in operating the tool. In addition, the annulus 12 is provided intermediate the handles 18 with slots 14, in which are pivotally mounted cutters or scrapers 15. These cutters or scrapers are mounted upon pivot pins 15 which extend through spaced ears or enlargements 17, projecting from the annulus 12, the inner end of the cutter or scraper being pointed or sharpened as shown Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 13 1922 Serial No. 509,812.
at 18 so that movement of the walls of the grooves 11 will provide a cutting or scraping action for the removal of carbon. Extending from the annulus 12 at opposite ends of each of the slots 1 1, are lugs 19 and 20, the first mentioned lug and the outer end of the carrier or scraper 15, having located therebetween a spring 21. This spring acts to force the inner end of the cutter or scraper within the groove 11, this movement being limited by a set screw 22 which is adjustable within the lug 20. This adjusting screw serves to limit the movement of the cutter or scraper in an opposite direction.
It will be apparent from the foregoing clescription and the accompanying drawings, that the invention may be positioned around a piston with the cutters or scrapers 15 extending within the groove 11 of the piston whereupon the tool may be reciprocated so that the inner or cutting edge 18 of the cutter or scraper will act to remove the carbon from the groove. The handles 13 provide for the convenience of operation of the tool. The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A. piston groove cleaner comprising an annulus adapted to surround the piston, a handle therefor, a cutter pivotally secured to the annulus and having one end extending within the inner diameter thereof for entrance within the ring groove of the piston and an adjustable stop engageable with the opposite end of the cutter for limiting its pivotal movement in one direction.
A piston groove cleaner comprising an annulus adapted to surround the piston, a handle therefor, a cutter pivotally secured to the annulus and having one end extending within the inner diameter thereof for entrace within the ring groove of the piston, a lug extending from the annulus upon opposite sides of the cutter, a spring positioned between the cutter and one of said lugs and a stop adjustably mounted in the other lug for contact with the opposite end of the out ter to limit its movement in one direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LUDIE E. WEDDLE.
