To all whom it may] concern:

Be it known that l, Gnoncn 0. SMITH, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Collar Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to fastening means adapted to be used in place of the ordinary collar-button for holding the ends of the collar and shirt band together.

An object of the invention is to provide fastening means of the character described by which the collar can be made to fit the shirt band perfectly even though the collar is of an incorrect size.

Another object of the invention is to provide means by which the collar may be fas tened so as to lit the wearer with the desired SIlllgIlQSS 01 1005611688.

The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with theforegoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invent-ion as set forth in the claim.

Referring to said drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar fixed to a shirt band by means of the fastener of my invention.

Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the collar, band and fastener in fixed relation.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the fastener considerably enlarged.

Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal section of the fastener showing the ends of a collar clamped therein.

The ends of the collar of the detached starched type are usually secured to the ends of the neck band of the shirt by means of the well-known collar button, which is adapted to engage in the button-holes thereof. Such a mode of attachment between the col lar and band obviously permits of no adjustment, and quite frequently the collar, due to the stretching of the fabric thereof or of the shirt band, or in fact being primarily of an incorrect size, forms a very poor fit around the band thereby causing the latter to slip out from under the collar-a condition which to say the least is very annoying. In accordance with the present invention the collar may be attached to the band, and the ends thereof secured together in any desired overlapping relation thereby not only making it possible t-o-secu're the desired fit of the collar and band, but enabling the collar to be adjusted so as to fit the convenience of the wearer.

Briefly expressed the fastener as shown in the drawings comprises a U-shaped member between the legs of which the overlapping ends of the collar are adapted to be clamped by means of a screw positioned at the front of the fastener. Means are provided at the rear of the device for securing the ends of shirt band to the fastener.

A detailed description follows:

The fastener as illustrated comp-rises a U shaped member 2 between the legs 3 and 1- of which the ends 6 and 7 of the collar 8 is adapted to be inserted. The member 2 is preferably formed of metal such as steel, and riveted or otherwise fixed to the leg 3 thereof is a headed shank 9 which extends outwardly therefrom in perpendicular relation thereto and is arranged to be inserted through the usual button-holes 12 of the ends 13 of the shirt neck band 14 so that said ends will be held in the usual overlapping relation between the head or the shank and the outer side of the said leg.

Means are provided for clamping the ends of the collar in any desired overlapping relation in the fastener. Aligned axially with the shank 9 is a screw 16 which is threaded in the leg 4 of the member and is adapted to clamp the ends of the collar against the concave inner side 17 of the leg 3. The screw may be turned by the knurled head 18 thereof, which when the fastener is in use pre sents an appearance somewhat similar to the usual head of the common collar button. The end of the screw is preferably flattened after being threaded in the member so that the screw cannot accidentally be entirely withdrawn therefrom.

In the use of the fastener the ends of the collar are inserted between the legs 3 and 4 of the member after the shank 9 properly engage the button-holes of the ends of the shirt or neck band. The ends of the collar are then drawn together so that the sides of the collar will fit snugly against the shirt band as clearly shown in Figure 2. The screw is then turned until the ends of the collar are tightly clamped against the leg 3. Owing to the concave face of the latter,

the portion of the material of the collar ends at the clamping area will be bent inwardly thereby preventing any slip or relative movement of said ends when properly engaged in the fastener. To release the collar it is merely necessary to partly withdraw the screw and then separate the collar ends.

It will thus be clear that when a collar is secured to the neck band with the fastener of my inventioinvthat the band will not slip out from under the collar, and that further more the use of the button-holes in the'ends of the collar may be entirely dispensed with.

The fasteneris also advantageous in that it permits the wearer to adjust the collar to fit him with the desired snugness or looseness as the case may be.

I claim: I

A collar fastener comprising a U-shaped member adapted for the reception of the two ends of collar, one of the legs of said member being formed concave on its inner side, a shank fixed to said leg and extending outward perpendicularly therefrom provided with a head arranged'to be passed through the button-holes of a shirt band whereby the two ends of said band may be held between said legand said head, and a screw'threaded through the other leg of said member and aligned with said shank adapted to clamp the two ends of said collars against the concave surface of said first leg.
