Application filed November 10, 1919. Serial To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro A. SbRnNsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of this invention are to pro- ,vide a simple and practical valve construction, in which the valve element and the seat can be readily removed from the valve casing for the purposes of inspection and repair. Other objects are to simplify and reduce the niunber of parts.
Generally speaking, the invention involves the combination with the valve casing, of a valve carrier in the nature of a plug which can be bodily inserted in, or removed from the casing and which carries'both the movable valve element and the valve seat which is engaged thereby.
The details of the invention will be understood from the following description, taken in connection with the drawing forming a part thereof and in which I have shown the valve embodied in a practical commercial form. I wish it understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the precise structure disclosed and is capable of modification without departure from the true spirit and scope of the invention. In the drawing referred to, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the valve in closed position. Figure 2 is a similar view with the valve parts in open position.
Figures 3 and 4 are plan and side views respectively of the movable valve element.
he casing or body of the valve is designated 5, the ferent sides by a partition 6, which is formed with a passage therethrough and with a seat 7 surrounding said passage. This valve casing is also formed with an extension or tubular neck portion 8 which is open to one side of the valve and which is designed to receive the removable valve carrier.
The valve carrier is designated 9 and is shown in the form of a tubular plug or sleeve externally screw-threaded at 10 to fit the internal screw-threads 11 of the neck. This valve carrier is formed at its lower or inner end with a shoulder 12 opposed to the seat 6 and arranged to be forced into liquid-tight engagement with such seat.
Specification of Letters Patent.
same being divided into two dif- Patented Jnne13, 31922. no. 336,861.
The liquid-tight engagement between the shoulder of the plug and seat of the casing is effected by a-packing ring 13 interposed between said shoulder and seat, said packing ring being constructed of hard fibres or other suitable packing material.
This packing ring is shown as centralized and held in proper position by means of an annular flange 14 projecting from the lower end'of the valve carrier and engaging within the inner periphery of the packing ring.
Mounted in the carrier is the movable valve element '15, said element being shown as having an angular shaped stem 16, having a sliding fit in a corresponding bore in the carrier and internally screw-threaded to receive the lower threaded end 17 of the valve stem 18. This valve stem is shown formed with an annular outstanding shoulder or collar 19 upper end of the valve carrier and held rotatably therein by a suitable packing gland 21. The valve stem is provided at its outer end with a suitable operating member, such as a hand wheel 22.
The viding the val packing ring 13, in addition to prove carrier and valve casing, also -forms a valve seat for engagement by the movable valve element, which extends down through the lower endof the .valve carrier. For this purpose the packing ring extends inward beyond the inner periphery of the seat in the valve casin so as to stand in position to be engage by and provide a seat for the annular rim portion 23 of the valve element. It will thus be evident that only a single packing member is necessary to'provi de both the valve seat and the packing between the valve casing and valve carrier and it will furtherbe evident that inspection of 'this packing and the entire valve as well is possible by simply removing the plug, as an entirety from the valve casing. If, upon inspection, it is found that the packing ring is worn, the same can be readily removed and a new one substituted by simply turning the hand wheel until the valve-element becomes disengaged from the stem, whereupon such valve element may be removed, permitting the packing ring to be unseated from the valve carrier and a .new one substituted.
A tight joint between the upper portion of the valve carrier and the neck of the valve casing is afforded a liquid-tight connection between i in the caseillustrated by a gasket 24: seated in an annular groove 25 in the threaded portion of the valve carrier and arranged to be forced into engagement with the end of the neck by a clamping ring 26 which is threaded on the threaded portion of the carrier above such gasket. Both ends of the valve carrier are thusheld in liquid-tight engagement with the casing. \Vhen the valve carrier is to be removed, the clamping ring- 26 is first unscrewed and then the carrier can be removed by unscrewing it from the casing, it usually being provided with a squared or angular head portion 27 Tor engagement by a wrench.
A special advantage ofthe construction disclosed is that the removable valve element moves in a straight line into and out of engagement with its seat without any rotary motion. lhis prevents the valve element from wearing away the portion of the packing ring which forms the valve seat. Also, as the valve stem simply rotates and does not partake of a longitudinal movement, there is very little wear on the gland surrounding the same, so that the possibility of-leakage about the stem is remote, but in case of any leakage at this point, the same may be quickly corrected y simply tightening the gland.
The invention, it will be seen, provides a simple and practical form of valve in which the parts which are liable to wear are readily accessible and easily replaceable.
What I claim is: v
1. A valve comprising a casing provided with a seat and with an internally screwthreaded neck portion, an externally screwthreaded valve plug engageable in said neck and provided with an external annular groove, a gasket seated in said groove for engagement with the end of the neck portion of the casing, a clamping ring internally screw-threaded and engaged on the externally threaded plug for forcing said gasket into engagement with-the casing and a valve element and cooperating valve seat carried by said valve plug. 7
2. A valve casing provided with a seat, a valve carrier insertable in the casing toward the seat, a packing member bodily carried by said valve carrier and adapted to be interposed between the inner end of the carrier and the seat, said valve carrier having an angular bore therethrough intermediate its ends a valve element having an angular shaped stem portion slidably engageable. within the angular bore of the valve carrier, a headed portion on said valve element extending beyond the inner end of the carrier and arranged for engagement with the packing -member, and a valve operating stem rotatably mounted but held against longitudinal movement in the carrier and having a screw threaded connection with the valve element.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
