ALOIS P. 1PRENDIllRGrAST,k OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
GAUGE COCK.
Application `filed April 4, 1921. Serial No. 458,403.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, ALors P. PRENDERGAST,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident boiler, the same being operated many timesl daily, there is a resultant wear upon the valve and valve seat which necessitates freguent repairs or replacement of the parts.
ne of the obj eots of the present invention is to provide means whereby a removable and reversible valve seat may be employed to the end that, when said seat becomes worn, it may be reversed. Moreover, if the valve itself becomes worn or injured, a new valve may be readily substituted, and a further object is to accomplish the construction of such a valve in such a manner that the separation of the parts for the removal or reversal of the valve, and the substitution of a new valve Vis desired, may be accomplished in the shortest possible time.
lVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter described and then more specifically pointed out in the claim.
The iigure of the drawing constituting a part of this specification is a longitudinal central section through an improved valve of u1 y construction., and'in'whichl is the valve casing, 2 is a tubular extension thereof provided withscrew-threads 3 for connecting the same with the boiler, said tubular extension being in communication with the valve casing. Said casing is provided with an annular shoulder 4 upon which rests a reversible and removable valve seat 5,k which valve seat is in the form of a ring having fiat sides and a lsuitably formed seating for the valve in the axial opening therethrough,
there being two similar seats one on either side. A nut 6 is provided with an inwardly extending shank 7 screw-threaded into the valve casing 1 and engaging the valve seat 5 and holding it in place. Said shank 7 is provided with an axial chamber 8 and, if desired, it may be, and preferably is, provided with a shouldered part 9 to engage the valve seat 5, though itwill be manifest that, if desired, the valve seat may be of approximately the same diameter as the interior of the valve casing and simply be engaged by the end of the shank 7. Within the chamber there is provided an annular channel 10 surrounding the shank 7, which latter is provided with radial openings 11 whereby the interior of the chamber 8 is in open communication with the annular channel 10, the latter communicating with the discharge nozzle 12.
The nut 6 is interiorly screw-threaded and the valve stem 13 has exterior screw-threads engaging the same, said stem carrying the valve 14 of any suitable or desired construction on its inner end to engage the valve seat 5. Preferably, this valve 14 is removably secured to the valve stem, as by means of a shank 15 extending axially into said valve stem.
The nut-6 is also provided with an outwardly extending shank 16, screwthreaded on its exterior, and a cap 17 screw-.threaded onto said shank serves to compress the usual or any suitable packing 18 against the outward end of the shank 16- and around the valve stem 13. The valve stem 13 is provided with the usual or any suitable operating-handle 19.
When it is desired to reverse the valve seat 5, or to remove it and replace a new one, all that is necessary to do is to unscrew the nut 6. 4The valve seat may then be readily removed and reversed, or a new valve seat placed in position, and by screwing the nut 6 again into the valve casing the valve is ready for operation.
`It will be perceived that l have provided. a valve of great simplicity of construction, which may be disassembled and` reassembled in the shortest possible time for repairs, and in which the parts are all readily machined -when constructing the device.
chambered Shank screw-threaded into seidy chamber, Suid shank being; provhfed 'with radial openings in c0n111'1u11cat(m with un unular channel formed in said chamber, a Valve-Stem screw-threaded into said nut and carrying the shank of said valve in the inner end thereof, and a discharge nozzle formed en the enlarged end 0i said casing und in open communication with the threaded chamber thereof. l@
In testimony whereofl I have signed this speccaton.
ALOS P. PRENDERGAST.
