IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES;
.Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,924, dated August 19, 1873; application filed April 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS B. DoRsEY, of Chillicothe, Missouri, have invented a new andusefulImprovementinWashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the inventioiris to provide a cheap and efficient washing-machine, of simple and durable construction, and particularly to afford a means by which the operator may constantly control the force applied to the clothes.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view, partly in section.
`A are the parallel boards, which are of suitable depth, the ends of which are beveled to rest against the inner sides of a tub of ordinary construction. Rigidly secured to them are the standards B, which are of `proper width, and against which, resting upon the boards A, are the rectangular blocks c, in one of which is cut an aperture to receive a pin, which serves as an axle of the uted drum or cylinder D, and in the other a slot or aperture to accommodate the axle of the crank E, by means of which the drum is actuated, being appropriatelyconnected therewith. Above the blocks `c, corresponding substantially in size therewith, are the blocks F, in which are pivoted the rollers H, which are arranged,with reference to the lcylinder D, so that a circular line vpassing through their lowest points will form an are parallel to the arc of the circumference of the cylinder D, and as near thereto as may appear expedient. The blocks F are fastened together by means of the tie I, the ends of which project into the slots b, and which are arranged so that they may, with the rollers attached,be Ilaised or lowered at pleasure. Above the tie I, pivoted in the slot in the standard removed from the crank E, is the lever K, the lower surface of which, adjacent to either of the standards, is removed soV as to permit only its central part t-o .come in contact with the tie I beneath, its power end, suitably conformed lin size, passing within the slot b in the other standard, being arranged to move freely therein, and projecting sufliciently to accommodate the parts hereinafter mentioned. To the power end of the lever K is attached, by means of a metallic strap or in any appropriate manner, the upper end of the helical spring L, which, passing down the outer side of the standard, has its lower end secured thereto by any appropriate means in such position as to properly extend the coil. Pivoted to the standard last named, above the lever K, is the transverse lever M, the power end extending outward in such position as to be readily controlled by the operator, its lower edge resting upon the lever K. The ends of the boards A extend beyond the standards B, thus forming spaces to receive the cleats y, which are constructed with shoulders to support the machine, and which are designed to be securely fastened to the inside of the tub, the shoulderends projecting upward.
The cleats y having been securely attached to the inside of the tub, the machine is placed in position on them. The end of the piece of clothing is inserted between the iluted cylinder D and rollers H, and power applied at the crank E. The piece of clothing is Vthus drawn between the fluted cylinder and rollers, passing out upon the reverse side of the machine. It' the pressure effected by the spring is insuflicient, the operator presses upon the power end of the lever M, thus forcing the rollers H nearer the cylinder D, and cifecting the desired object, regulating the operation at pleasure. It is apparent,
also, that by the same operation, sufficient power being applied to the lever M, the machine may be made to fultill the offices of a wringer. Y

The cylinder D, rollers H, blocks F, tie I, lever K, and spring L, in combination with the lever M, for the uses and purposes shown and described.
