Be it known that we, FRANK H. ARM- s'rnoivo and EDWIN L. HARMON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Auburn, county of Cayuga, and State of New York, and of Groton, countyof rllompkins, and State oi' New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines (.Case #146), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to line spacing means for visible typewritino' machines.
2ne of the main objects of the invention is to provide simple and vefficient means for line spacing the platen 'for typewriting machines, the spacing mechanism being so constructed that it serves to lock the platen against rotation at the end oi: each line spacing movement to prevent overrunning of the platen, and to insure `accurate spacing between the lines of typewriting.
Another object ot the invention is to providea line spacing means wherein the line spacing pawl in its normal or fit-rest position will be out of engagement with the line space ratchet wheel, whereby theplaten may be readily turned iii either direction through the linger pieces or knobs.
Another object of the invention is to p rovide simple and eicient means 'for varying the extent of the line spacing rotation ci' the platen.
A `further object or the inventionl is to simplify and improve the line spacing mechanism, and to construct the mechanism ot simple parts, which may be readilyand accurately assembled. n

Referring to thevarious parts by numerals, 1 designates the left-hand end of the platen carriage; 2 the carriage end bracket, and 3 the platen suitably journaled in said bracket. The end of the platen shaft is provided with the usual finger piece or knob a, by which it may be freely rotated in either direction.' Suitably secured to the platen end or to the platen shaft, as desired, is a line space ratchet wheel 5, having its teeth on the 'periphery thereof in the usual manner, as indicated inthe drawings.
The end bracket 2 oi the platen carriage is formed at its forward edge at a short distance above the carriage bed with anv inwardly extending pivot ybracket or lug 6, the lower edge of said bracket being recessed at 621, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. Pivoted at the right-hand end of the lug 6 is a line space lever 7, said lever being formed with the upwardly extending operating arm 8 and with the outwardly and downwardly extending arm 9. The line space lever near its point ot pivot is provided with a rearwardly extending yoke 10, the innerend of which is bent upwardly and inwardly to form the pivot arm 11, said inner arm being pivoted in van rip-standing lug 13, formed on the carriage bed, as indicated clearly in Fig. 4. The said inner end of the pivoted yokef'is' formed with a depending lug 14, to which a spring 15 is connected, the other end of said spring `being secured to a suitable lug on the carriage bed. Said spring v normally holds the line space lever in its normal position, as shown in F ig. 2, and returns it to that position after the line spacing operation. The operating arm 8 of the line space lever is provided at its upper end with a curved nger piece 16, which is adapted to be grasped when moving the line space lever to the right inthe line spacing operation. The inner pvot of the yoke 10, which is also the inner support of theline space lever is formed by an inte gral bearing lug, preferably stamped out `of the material forming the line space lever and the yoke 10, the said lug extending through a suitable aperture in the up-standing lug 13 of the carriage bed. It is manifest, however, that this pivot may be formed in any other suitable manner. 1t is manifest that by providing the yoke 10 and the inner bearing therefor, the line space leverv is strengthened and supported in such manner that it will move accurately, and withstand a great amount of the necessarily rough usage which the line space lever is subjected to.
Pivotally secured to the lower end of the downwardly and outwardly extending arm 9 of the line space lever and on the inner side thereof is a line space pawl 17, said pawl normally extending upwardly and inwardly, the inner end thereof being turned outwardly and then downwardly to form a hook 18, adapted to embrace loosely the upper curved edge 19 of the line space lever, as indicated clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Connected `to the inner lower edge of the line space pawl and to the adjacent portion of the yoke 10 of the line space lever is a spring 19, said spring normally holding` the line space pawl in its normal position against a stop pin 20, secured to the inner side of the line space lever. lVe preferably form this pin bystamping inwardly a portion ofthe said lever, but of course itl may be formed in any other suitable manner. The stop pin 2O is adapted to engage the upper surface of the pivot lug 6 and to serve as a stop to limit the outward movement of the line space lever' under the influence of its tension spring 15, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, so that said pin serves as a stop forthe line space lever and the line space pawl, and insures the accurate positioning of these parts with respect to the line space ratchet wheel. The outwardly turned hook 18 serves as an abutment to limit the movement of the pawl in the line space operation, as will be fully hereinafter described. The line space pawl is provided on its upper surface, substan tially midway its ends, with a rearwardly extending, substantially horizontal, toothengaging portion or nose 21, whose inner end is stepped to form an abutment 22,
adapted to be brought into engagement with the outer vertical, fiat surface of the ratchet wheel, the leading edge of the main part of the nose 21 being close to the side of said ratchet wheel, and in a position to be brought into engagement with the teeth thereof through the movement of the line space lever.
Pivoted to the line space lever on the pivot screw 23, which connects the line space pawl to said lever, is the lower end of an index device or arm 24, said index device lying close to the inner side of the line space lever, and between said lever and the line space pawl. The index device is formed of thin spring metal, and extends upwardly from its pivot, the upper end thereof being bent forwardly and` extending through an arc-shaped slot 25, formed in the line space lever, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. l The extreme upper end of the index device is then bent upwardly to form the linger piece 26, which lies on the forward side of the lever in convenient position to be engaged by the operator. The index de vice just below the finger piece, is formed with a forwardly extending locking lug 27, which is adapted to engage any one of the three index notches 28, formed in the lower margin of the slot 25 in the line space lever. The forwardly extending, substan-- tially horizontal part 29 of the index device, which carries the finger piece 26 at its forward end, serves as a limiting abutment `or stop, and is adapted to be engaged by the abutment hook 18 of the line space pawl. The index notches 28, are so placed with respect ,to the at-rest position of the line space pawl, that the abutment 18 will engage the stop 29, when the line space pawl has engaged and moved the ratchet wheel the desired number of spaces. The index device is of resilient metal, so that the locking lug 27 may be released from the index notches by pressing inwardly the linger piece 26. When the index device is in register with the desired index notch, the finger piece 26 is released, whereupon the index device will spring `forwardly to bring its locking lug into engagement with the registering index notch. The index device is so mounted on its pivot that when released it may be freely swung to the desired index notch.
It is thought that the operation of the device is manifest from the foregoingr description, but it may be briefly stated as follows:
By placing the locking lug of the index device in the innermost index notch (a) the ,abutment 29 will be brought close to the abutment18 of the line space pawl. The parts will then be in position to give the platen a movement of one tooth of the line .space ratchet wheel. A complete movement of the line space lever to the right will first cause the nose 21 to enter between two teeth of the line space wheel, the shoulder 22 engaging the vertical outer side of said wheel. The continued movement of the line space lever will cause the line space pawl to rotat-e the ratchet wheel until the abutment 18 and the stop 19 contact, the two abutments approaching each other during the movement of the line space lever. When the ratchet-wheel has thus been rotated the predetermined distance, they continued pressure on the line-space lever causes the projection 22 on the line-space .pawl to j am hard against the non-toothed face of the ratchetwheel to thus cause a braking action on the ratchet -wheel thereby preventing overthrow, no matter how sharply the line-space lever may be operated. Upon the release of the line space lever the spring will r eturn it to its normal position, the stop pin engaging the upper edge of the pivot lug` 6. The springl) will return the line space pawl to its normal position against said stop 20.
By placing the locking lug of the index device in the index notch marked b, the movement of the line space pawl will be sutlicient to rotate the platen the distance of two ratchet teeth; and by placing it in the index notch marked c, the' distance between the abutments 18 and 29 will be suiiicient to cause the pawl to rotate the platen the distance of three teeth before said abutments engage eachv other. V
Figs. 11 and 12 show the position of the nose of the line space pawl when it is in engagement with the ratchetl wheel, and Figs. 9 and 10 show the normal position of the nose ot the line space pawl when it is free of the ratchet wheel.
A spring-pressed roller is mounted on the carriage and engages the ratchet teeth to prevent the accidental rotation of the platen when the line space pawl is free of the ratchet wheel. 1t is manifest however, that the platen may be rotated by grasping the linger pieces e2, the roller 30 yielding to permit this operation.
The pivot lug 6 is recessed at 6'QL to permit the horizontal bar of the yoke 10 to swing upwardly when the line space lever is moved in the line spacing operation.
The linger piece 26 is bent rearwardly toward the line space lever and serves as a stop to engage the forward Ylace oie. said lever and thereby limit the inward movement of the resilient index device. The stop is so located that when it is in engagement with the tace et the line space lever, the locking lug 2? will be freed from the index notches and the index device may then be swung freely on its pivot.

2. ln a typewriting machine, the combination ci a platen trame, a rotary platen therein, a line space ratchet wheel connected to said platen, a line space lever pivoted on said frame, a line space pawl pivoted on the lever and provided with a nose adapted to engage the ratchet wheel, a flexible resilient index device mounted on the pivot of the line space pawl, its free, outer end being adapted to be swung toward or from the outer end of the line space pawl, the upper end of said index device extending forwardly through ka segmental slot in the line space lever, and forming an abutment, a locking lug formed on said index device and adapted to engage any one of a series ot index notches in the line space lever, an abutment formed on the outer end of the line space pawl and adapted to be brought into engagement with the abutment on the index device when the nose of the line space pawl is in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, and a finger piece formed on the index device whereby said locking lug may be snapped into any one of the index notches and the abutment on said device shifted'in its relation to the abutment on the line space pawl.
3. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen trame, a rotary platen therein, a line space ratchet wheel connected to said platen, a line space lever pivoted on said frame, a line space pawl pivoted on the lever and provided with a nose adapted to engage the ratchet wheel, a flexible resilient index device mounted on the pivot of the line space pawl, its free outer end being adapted to be swung toward or from the outer end of the line space pawl, the upper end of said index device extending forwardly through a segmental slot in the line space lever and forming an abutment, a locking lug formed on said index device and adapted to engage any one of a series of index notches in the line space lever, an abutment formed on the outer end ot the line space vpawl and adapted tol be brought into engagement lwith the abutment on the index device when the nose of the line space pawl is in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, a finger piece formed on the index device whereby the locking lug may be snapped into any one oit the index notches and the abutment on said device shifted in its relation to the abutment on the line space pawl, a spring connected to the line space lever to return it to its normal position, a stop to arrestthe line space lever in its normal position, and a spring connected to the line space pawl and to the line space lever to return said pawl to its `normal position against the line space lever stop.

8 In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen rotatably supported on the carriage, a ratchet wheel rotatable with the platen, a line space lever pivotally supported on the carriage, a pawl pivotally held to the line space lever adapted to engage and rotate the ratchet wheel when the lever ,is rocked in one direction, a spring for normally rocking the lever in the `opposite direction, cooperating stops on the lever and carriage for determining the normal position of the lever, and a spring for normally rocking the pawl into engagement with the stop on the lever, said stop on the lever being so located as to cause the pawl to rock with the lever out of engagement with the ratchet wheel as the lever returns to normal position.

In a typmvritini;` machine, the combination of a platen trame, a platen, a line space ratchet wheel, a line space lever pivoted on said trame, a line space pawl pivoted on the lever and adapted; to engage the ratchet wheel, a llexible resilient index device pvoted on the line space lever and adapted to be moved toward or from the line space pawl, an abutment formed on said index device and extending through a slot formed in the line space lever, a lug on said index device adapted to engage index notches in the line space lever, said abutment being adapted tol engage the line space pawl at the completion of the line spacing operation.

12. ln a typeiviitingmachine, the combination oit' a line space lever pivotally supported, a line space paivl pivoted on the said lever, a flexible resilient index device pivoted on the line space lever the upper end of said index device extending` through slot in the line space lever and forming` an abutment, a locking;i lng' on said index device adapted tol engage any one oi' a series of index notches in the li ne space lever, an abutment formed on the outer end of the line space paWl adapted to be brought into engagement vvith the abutment on the index device at the completion of the line spacingoperation, a iin- `rer piece formed on the index device whereby said locking' lug maybe snapped into any one o1" the index notches and the abutment on said device shifted in its relation to the abutment on the line space pavvl, and a stop earried by the index device and adapted to engage the line space lever when the locking lug` has been forced out of the index notches.

In a typewriting` machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen rotatably supported on the carriage, a ratchet wheel rotatable With the platen, a line space lever pivotally supported on the carriage to swing transversely of the ratchet Wheel, a pavvl pivotally held to the lever to swing in a plane at right angles to the ratchet wheel about a diiierent axis from the pivotal axis of the lever, adjustable and iixed stops on the lever cooperating with the pavvl for determining the extent of movement of the paWl about its pivot, an abutment on the carriage cooperating with the fixed stop on the lever for determining the normal position of the lever, and yieldable means for restoring the lever to normal position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen rotatably supported on the carriage, a ratchet Wheel rotatable with the platen, a line space lever pivotally supported on the carriage to swing transversely of the ratchet Wheel, a pavvl pivotally held to the lever to swing in a plane at right angles to the ratchet wheel about a different axis from the pivotal axis oi the lever, cooperating fixed stops on the lever and carriage for determining the normal position of the lever, a spring for restoring the lever to normal position, a resilient arm pivotally held at one end to the lever and provided with an abutment cooperating with the fixed stop on the lever to determine the extent of movement of the pawl about its pivot, cooperating means on the arm and lever for locking the free end of the arm to the lever in diiierent pivotally adjusted positions, and a linger piece on said arm for flexing the arm laterally to release the free end of the same from the lever.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen journalled in the carriage, a ratchet Wheel rotatable With the platen, a line space lever provided With a pivot yoke extending transversely of the carriage, means pivotally connecting the yoke at its ends with the carriage to permit the lever to be rocked in a plane at right angles to the ratchet Wheel, a line-space paivl pivotally held to the lever at a point at one side of the yoke, a fixed stop on the lever above the yoke, a spring conneeted Wit-h the pavvl and yoke normally holding the pawl against said iixed stop, an adjustable stop on the lever cooperating,- with said pawl to limit the extent of movement of the pawl about its pivot, an abutment on the carriage cooperating With the fixed stop on the lever to determine the normal position of the lever, and yieldable means for restoring the lever to normal position.
