Be it known that I, RUSSELL E. BENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding and Listing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for showing automatically upon the printed record of work of adding and listing machines that the addition has exceeded the capacity of the machine and for enabling the user to determine from the printed record to what extent the capacity of the machine has been exceeded. so that he will thus be enabled to arrive at the correct total.
In the use of the ordinary adding and listing machine it is common to run long lists of items and the total is apt to exceed the the user having noticed that the total is running so high. In such case, with all of the wheels showing numbers, the operator cannot be sure whether or not there has been an over-running.
By the present invention provision is made for the printing of a special sign whenever the wheel of highest denomination completes a rotation and thus the user will be informed as to whether or not an over-running of the accumulator is to be taken into account in ascertaining the total.
In the form of embodiment of the invention here shown, means for carrying out the object are adapted to the well-known Burroughs tyne of adding and listing machine. A special type carrier is located at the left of the usual series of amount type carriers and this special type carrier is put under control of the wheel of highest denomination. The latter, in completing a rotation, trips a pawl such as commonly used in the Burroughs machine for transfer purposes and this pawl releases a latch corresponding to the latches ordinarily employed to hold down the transfer pawls. The latch so utilized is operatively connected to a detent or controlling member for the special type carrier. The latter is normally withheld from printing position but in case of an over-ad dition is released so that in the ensuing operation of the machine the special sign will be recorded at the left of the amount which i is printed thus indicating that a unit in an order or denomination beyond the capacity of the machine is to be taken into account in footing up the total.
While as stated the invention is here shown especially adapted to the well-known Burroughs'adding and listin machine, it is nevertheless to be understood that it is capubic of adaptation to various other types of machines.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents in left-side elevation mechanism of the well-known Burroughs machine with an equipment for carrying out the present invention, all parts being illustrated as at normal; Fig. 2 shows in similar elevation certain of the parts which appear in Fig. 1 but under different conditions, to-wit, that ohtaining when the operating handle of the machine has been drawn forward but there has been no over-running of the addition; Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the changed relationship of parts when the handle of the machine has returned home and an over-addition has taken place; Fig. 4; is another view of the same sort indicating the relationship of parts when the handle of the machine has been drawn forward after such over-running of the addition and when the printing of the special sign takes place; Fig. 5 shows the special type carrier in right-side elevation detached; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of a portion of the machine in eluding the special parts: and Fig. 7 shows an example of work. I For the details of construction of the familiar Burroughs machine reference may be had to various prior patents, of which it will sufiice to mention Nos. 504,963 and 505,078, issued September 12, 1893, on inventions of William S. Burroughs. and No. 918,860, issued March 2, 1909 on the invention of Jesse G. Vincent.
The numeral 916 designates the left-hand pinion of the usual series of adding pinions in this type of machine and 610 the racks by which these pinions are turned, said racks being mounted through slot and pin and spring connections on the forward ends of levers 611 independently pivoted on a central rock shaft 600 and at their rear ends carrying segmental series of sliding yn p a The numeral 613 designates the usual restoring frame secured to the rock shaft 600 and vibrated in every operation of the machine and normally upholding the forward ends of the levers 611 and holding their rear ends downward with the types all below the printing line or the horizontal diametrical plane of the roller platen 17. The arrangement for controlling the extent of movement of the racks and for controlling the order of engagement and disengagement between the pinions and racks is well known and fully set forth in said prior patents and need not be here described. The transfer mechanisms for carrying tens from lower to higher order pinions is also of the familiar character and requires no special description and the same may be said of the impression means whereby the amount of types are driven against the platen.
In carrying out the present invention there is loosely mounted upon the rock shaft 600 just to the left of the highest order type carrying lever 611 a special type carrying arm A upheld by a spring a and notched as at a, to receive a pin 3) projecting from the adjacent type carrying lever 611. This arm A carries a single sliding spring-held type plate 618 with a single type as clearly shown in Fig. 5, such type in the present instance being in the form of a cross or addition mark, though of course it may have any sort of a printing face. It is adapted to be driven against the platen by a hammer 715 constituting, as part of an impression mechanism. the duplicate of those which come into play in the printing of amounts and the construction and mode of operation of which is well understood and set forth in prior patents already mentioned. The arm A has an inclined shoulder a similar to those common upon the regular type carriers and having the same mode of cooperation with the pawl 718 of the impression mechanism. It will be seen from the above that normally this special type carrying arm is restrained by the adjacent numeral type carrier and it will be understood that this causes the type 618 to normally stand below the printing line as indicated in Fig. 1. So long as it occupies such a position or a position only slightly elevated, as will hereinafter be further explained, the in clined edge or shoulder a will prevent the release of the hammer 715, in the usual manner. Whether or not the special type carrier is to advance to the printing line is determined by the degree of rotation of the wheel 916 of highest order. Ordinarily that wheel carries a trip or cam similar to those on the other wheels which serve to release or displace the usual transfer pawls, though the trip or cam on the highest wheel does not bring about any transfer operation s1nce of course the highest wheel has no wheel to which its tens can carry. The cam upon it therefore serves usually simply as a zero stop member. In the present instance a cam of this sort designated 0 is secured to the left side of the pinion 916 and cooperates with a. pawl 413 which is of the same construction and arrangement as what are commonly known as transfer pawls in the Burroughs machine. This pawl 4:13 is connected by a spring 0 with a latch 411* which is just the same kind as those commonly known as transfer latches in the Burroughs machine. It performs the familiar function of holding out the pawl 113 when the latterhas been displaced by the cam 0. iilhis is illustrated in Fig. 3. as usual, at least to the extent of presenting zeros at the printing line. This movement of the left-hand lever 611 permits a slight rise of the special type carrying arm to the position shown in Fig. 2, where the stud a is shown seated in the hollow of the hook (I, but the incline a is still in position to disable the pawl 718. If, however, in the preceding operation the highest wheel 916 had passed the zero point, the pawl 413 would have been displaced and the latch 411* would have moved rearward over the pawl and would stand ready, under the impulse of the spring 0, to swing the arm I) rearward as soon as the special type carrier A moved down to normal at the conclusion of the succeeding operation, which condition is illustrated in Fig. 3, where the hook d is shown to have escaped rearwardly past the stud a In order to permit the immediate latching movement of the latch 111*, notwithstanding the hood d is at the time interlocked with the stud er the link C is made with a short slot 0 where it connects with said latch 411 the latter having a stud 0* engaging said slot, see particularly Figs. 2 and 3. Now the condition having been arrived at which is illustrated in Fig. 3, it will be seen that in the next operation when the handle is pulled forward the special type carrier will rise unobstructed by the hook d of the arm D. In so doing its stud a passes up along the edge 05' and lands against the horizontal shoulder d as illustrated in Fig. 4 and this positions the type (318" at the printing line. It furthermore carries the inclined shoulder a above the pawl 718 so that at the conclusion of the forward stroke of the operating handle the hammer 715 is released and the special type prints.
It will be understood that the pawl 411' is restored along with the similar pawls and by the usual form of mechanism. This comprises a. bail 90% which swings forward as the operating handle comes to the end of its forward stroke and somewhat over-restores the latches to permit ample clearance for re engagement of the transfer pawls with these latches. N ow it will be seen that this restoration' of latches takes place at a time when the arm D is held against forward movement, 6., either with the stud a seated in the hook (Z as shown in Fig. 2 or with said stud in front of the vertical edge d as illustrated in Fig. 4. sita-tes a yielding form of connection between the link C and the arm C. To this end the rear portion of the said link is longitudinally slotted as shown at e and said arm C has a stud e engaging said slot and connected by a spring 6 with the link. This spring stretches to a comparatively slight extent when the latch 211' is simply rocked forward as in Fig. 2 from its normal position. The spring stretches to'a greater extent when the latch is rocked forward from its effective position, to-wit that illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. t shows the spring so stretched and ready to swing the arm D forward as soon as the special type carrier is returned to normal position which. occurs when the handle returns home and the frame 613 restores the lever 611, the pin 2; of the left-hand lever operating upon the special type carrier to carry its stud a below the point of the hook (Z.
Itwill be seen that with the above described construction whenever the highest wheel overruns the special type will be caused to print in the next operation.
7 illustrates such a record as the machine, equipped with the special device, is adapted to make, this record showing a series of items of large denomination which will cause over-running of the highest wheel in a number of instances. In order to figure the full total it is only necessary to count the number of special marks at the left of the record, for this represents the number of times the highest wheel has over-run and consequently the number of digits in the highest order of the reel total. In the example given the printed total is 4,302,920.66 but the wheels have overcarried five times as indicated by the mark at the left of'items. Hence the full total is 54,302,92066.
If the last item of the above example, instead of being 345543211, was high enough This condition necesto cause another carry beyond the capacity of the machine, 6. 9., if the item was 945543211, then in the blank stroke required to be taken before the total is struck, the plus sign would print and appear on the record opposite the blank space'between the last added item and the total, or in the event a blank stroke was not required, then the plus sign would be printed along with the total. The full total in such case would start with the numeral 6 instead of 5, since the plus sign would appear six times on the record.
lVhile the above described construotionis well adapted to the purpose it is susceptible of modification within the scope of the invention.
That is claimed is:
1. In an adding and listing machine, the combination of a series of adding wheels, means for differentially actuating the same, amount printing mechanism, and means un der control of the adding wheel of highest order for recording to denote that the registering capacity of the wheels has been exceeded.
2. In an adding and listing machine, the
