My invention relates to cash registers, and particularly to such registers as make a per- Many machines of this type are adapted to print, when desired, on a check which is inserted in the machine. In many cases it is not desired to,

My invention in particular provides means the platen striking the type, the said means being adapted to be displaced on the insertion .of the check into the machine. I alsoprovide means for indicating the position of the platen-lock, whereby the operator may know definitely whet-herthe locking device is in its operative position or not.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of arts, the essential elements of which are set orth in appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment which is hereinafter specifically described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of Of said drawmgs: section through the machine. . I have shown this invention as applied to a well known type of 1nachine,but 1t will be understood that it may be-used in connection with any other type of printing cash registers, as theimprovement 1s not' limited in scope to anyparticular type.

This shaft 16 also carries a pinion 17, meshing with a segmental rack 18 on a lever 19,

The keys are adapted through any desired mechanism (this not being a part of my present invention) to set printing wheels 21,
shown in Fig. 2, to a position corresponding with the operated key. A platen 23 is pivoted v on a pin 24, and has a spring 25, as shown, for forcing it against the type-wheels. A link 26 is connected to said platen, and to this link is pivoted a bell-crank lever 27, one arm of which is adapted to be engaged and moved by aflcam' 28, also mounted on shaft 16 to retract the platen. As shown in Fig. 2, the platen is normally prevented from strik ing the type by a bar 29 depending from a.
and having a spring 31 tending to pin 30, force the bar29 forward to the position shown in this figure. Its forward motion is prevented by ,a pin 32, mounted on the ma-- chine frame, which normally engages a notch 33 on a pawl 34, pivoted to the bar 29. This pawl 34 isshown separately in Fig. 7, and it will be seen thatit has in addition to the notch 33 a second notch 34, which notch 34 is adapted to engage with pin 32 when the bar- 29 is rocked rearward to the position shown. in Fig. 4. This rearward rocking is 100 caused by the insertion of a check over the table 35, the check being adapted to engage a lug 36 on the bar 29. It will be evident, therefore, that the/insertion of a check and its movement toward the rear of the machine 105 will engage lug 36, and thereby move bar 29 rearward'a ainst a stop-pin-37 on the frame of the mac 11118. The pawl 34 will then be dropped by gravity to the position shown in Fig. 4, 1n whichcase the notch 34 engages 110 which lever is journaled on the shaft 11, carpin 32 and maintains the locking-bar 23 in this position. :Upon the operation of the machine the laten will now be allowed to move under, the impulse of spring 25 to cause 5 an'impression to be made on the check. lever 37 is pivotedona in.38 on the main frame, and as shown in g. 4 is adapted to engage and be movedby a-cam39, also on' shaft 16. This lever 37 has at its upward end a hook 38*, which when forwardly moved will engage awl 34 and carry the'notch 34 away from pih 32; The lock-bar 29' will then spring forward under the impulse of spring 31 to the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby again 5 preventing the'platen from striking the type.

having a pin and s ot connection with a lever 42 connected by'a link 43 to the locking-bar 29. Thefront end of bell-crank 40' carries an indicatin through a ho e45 in the casing, as is seen-in Fig. 4. This shield-inay bear any desired marking, and is' only shown when the check 0 has been insertedand the locking-bar 29' moved rearwardly.
