JESSE ALEXANDER, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNO-R, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALE T0 EMMA SCHEU SCHORCHT, 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed October 8, 1908. Serial No. 456,806.
To all whom it may concern;
Be'itknown that I, Jnssn Annxnxonn, citizen of'the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in l vpe-W'ritcrLine-Spacing Mechanism of which the following is a full, clear and exact. description.
My invention relates to line spacing mechanism for typewriters.
This application is filed in place of applicants abandoned applications 130,550, tiled Nov. 8, 1902, and 3%),637, filed October 2c, 1900.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure l is a plan view of those parts of a typewriting machine involving the improve.- ments of my invention. Fig.2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a view of the left-hand end of the carriage construction and the supporting frame of the machine and illustrating the application of my. in-
vention.
In these drawings. 1 indicates a fragment of the frame of the machine of suitable construction.
2 is a member of the carriage construction which is adapted to move laterally across the machine. 2- is another member of the carriage construction. called a side plate. Q
-1 indicates a fragment of a suitable rotary platen. 5 is the shaft therefor which has bearings in the side plate 3 at the lefthand end of the machine and in a sin'lilar side plate at the right hand end of the machine.
(3 is a suitable knob vor handle for manually turning the platen.
The carriage has an integral upwardly projecting post 7 suitably curved and formed on the left-hand outer surface for digital engagement for the purpose of moving the earriage from the left-hand side of the machine to the right. i
8 is rowii ratchetearriedby the platen at the left-hand end.
Sl'is a S1T)1'llig-1)l'SS(l roller-carried by the carriage and engaging with the teeth of the ratchet for holding the platen in definite line positions.
10 is an operating lever suitably formed on its forward end for digital engagementv and having a. vertical axis.
11 is a pawl pivotally carried on a vertical axis by the operating'lever 10 and adapted to be thrown into engagement with the teeth of the ratchet when the operating handle is moved to the right. i
12 isan adjustable stop securedin the carriage side plate which engages the rear end of the pawl 11 when the operating handle is moved to the left and rests against the carriage side plate as shown particularly in].
Fig. 1 This stop throws the pawl out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet so that the ratchet is free to be moved in either direction by hand.
13 is a spring-pressed stop pivotally mounted and having a handle 14. 15 a spring for returning the operating lever to its normal position. i This stop is adapted to .mined by the position of the adjustable step.
By reason of the position of upright post .7, and operating lever 10, the parts are adapted for quick and convenient operation, it belng possible to apply one part of the hand to the post 7 for moving'the carnage and then during the same movement to apply another part of the hand or finger to the operating lg'ver for the purposeof spacing. lhe advantage of this construction will be apparent to those skilled in the art,
What I claim is v 1. A line-spacing mechanism for a typewriter including a rotatable platen having a horizontal axis; a crown ratchet-wheel mofvable therewith,.a horizontally movable operating-lever mounted on a vertical axis, a pawl pivoted to said-lever forward of its axis and also having a vertical axis. a stop for normally holding said pawl out of engagem'ent with said ratchet and aspring for moving said pawl into engagement with said ratchet when said lever is operated and said pawl is released from its stop.
2. A line-spacing mechanism'for a type- Writer including a platen, a ratchet, a carriage side-plate affording a bearing therefor; an upwardly projecting portion rigidly carried by said side-plate and adapted for digital engagement, an operating lever 13 pivotally' mounted on a vertical axis and for limiting the operative movement of said having a forwardly projecting .handle porpawl.
tion adapted for digital engagement, a pawl carried by said lever normally disengaged JESSE ALEXANDER"- from said ratchet but adapted to rotate said Witnesses: ratchet when Operated by said lever and an RALPH C. POWELL,
adjust-able stop mounted'en a Vertical pivot CHAS. A. PEARD.
