In said application, a, two-armed pawl drives a ratchet, step by step in one direction or the other, to advance or reverse the direction of-feed of the paper. Asingle drive means operates the pawl, and a shiftable latch determines which arm of the pawl shall be effective and the other idle.
This device, however, provides for a feed er constant degree, there being no means for advancing or reversing thk paper through more than a single line space interval.
@ne ob ect of the present invention-1s to enable the paper to be fed through varying distances on either advance or reverse line spacing, at the will of the operator, and to utilize in combination therewith, the ratchet and drive of the line space mechanism, disclosed in the application above referred to.
In rendering the line space mechanism variable, I have changed the construction and operation ,of the line space mechanism from the form on which this invention is an improvement, the'object being to improve such mechanism and obtain reliability and accuracy in variable feeding in either direction.
As one means tending to these ends, I have arranged for a line spacing adjustment which leaves the positi ely operating line space drive mechanism unaffected, and
thereby dispenses with parts liable to break or get out of order.

In the well-known Wales calculator, a carriage casting 1 (Figs. 1 and 6) having ways supports a carriage 3, including end pieces 4 suitably connected by brace rods 5. An axle 6 journaled in the-end pieces, supports a platen 7, and a finger knob or twirler 8 (Fig. 6) fast on the axle, enables the operator to manually turn the platen forwardly or backwardly to advance or reverse the paper to bring a desired line to the printing point, or to insert and discharge advanced step by stepv through the drive .member 9, which on its forward stroke,
swings the driven member 11 from the position shown inFig. 1, to that shown in Fig.
3, and' an angle lever or fol-lower 13, 1+,
loose on the rock shaft 12, rocks with the driven member, due to a'spring '15 which presses arm 13 of the angle lever toward the driven member or ball 11. The angle lever, in turn, retracts an advance teed pawl 16 pivoted to the other arm let of said angle 'insure its engagement therewith. The drive member 9, on its return stroke, restores the driven member 11 to its Fig. 1 position, which latter member positively forces the angle lever 13, 14 rearwardly and upwardly to' cause the pawl 16 to turn the ratchet and platen'in the'usual manner. A cam edge ,on
the pawl lficontacts a roll 16 as the'pawl' approaches the end of its effective stroke, to disengage the pawl from the ratchet," and permit the ,platen to be tu'rned in either direction when the machine isat rest.
.If'the follower 13,14: and its pawl 16 partake of the complete forward. stroke of the driven member, the latter on its return stroke, will operate through the pawl. to turn the' ratchet and platen through the maximum line space stroke, or say, three line space intervals. It is desirable that this feed be varied to enable the paper to be fed through one or two linespace intervals at will, or even to disable the paper feed.
In applying a variable adjustment to the line space mechanism, I desire to avoid interference with the drive and driven, members 9 and 11 whose travel is constant and positive. and,hence. arrange the flexible conneetion between the follower 1'3, 14 and theswing or oscillate a shittable member 21 pi\' oted at 22 to the end plate 4. A series of graduated shoulders orabutments 24. 25 and Q 3, preft-u'ablv termed on one wall of an opening 27 in the member 31-. are thus adjustable into and out of ,the path of a stop 28 on the follower ll, which projects through the opening 27. Said abutments arrest the stop at predetermined points in its forward stroke to effect variations in the advance feed of the paper, depending upon the particular abutment brought to effective position.
Any one of a series of notches 29 on the lock plate 19, and corresponding with the abutments 26, fits over a pin 30 on the end plate 1 to holdfth'e shiftable member where adj usted.
.Vith abut1nent2-1 in the path of the stop 28, (Fig. 1), the latter is arrested shortly after the follower 13, 11, starts "on its forward stroke, and thus restricts the retraction of the pawl 16, and hence its-active stroke, to the minimum effective degree, which permits a rotation of the platen through one line space interval only. The forward stroke of the driven m'ember 11 is not affected, butthe spring 15 is further tensioned after the arrest of the follower 13, 14'. The
driven member travels idly on its return stroke until it picks up the follower 13, 14, to restore the latter to its position of rest,
(Fig. 1), and-in so doin propels the pawl 1G to drive the ratchet and platen one 'step orlinevspace interval. lVhen the abutment :26, is adjusted into the path of the stop 28, (Fig. 3), the drive and driven'members being shown at the end of their forward strokes,- it permits the maximum ettective stroke of thepawl 1Q, thus feeding the paper througlnsay, three steps or line space intervals.
Fig. 5 shows the abutment 23 inthe path of thestop 28- to lock the follower against the action of its spring 15, and thus disable the advance paper feed.-
The same drive mechanism operates a back or reverse line spacing mechanism, shown most clearly in Figs. 2, 1,'and 5, which mechanicalljv' steps the paper or work sheet backwardlv instead of forwardly. An I i arm 31-fast on the rock shaft. 12 operates. a link 32 connected to one arm of a rocking. lever 33 pivoted on a pin 34, the opposite arm of which rocking lever supports a back spacing or reversing pawl 35, adapted to-engage the opposite Side of the ratchet from pawl 10. A spring 36 tends to draw the 're versing pawl toward the ratchet 1T.
The reverse. feed pawl 35 lies retracted, as shown .in full lines in Fig. 4, when the machine is'at rest. The drive member H on its forward stroke. swings the driven member 11 and, throughtbe linkage 211, E39 and 33 just described. drivesthe pawl 33 against the ratchet 17, as indicated in dotted. lines in Fig. l, to turn the latter. The series of notches 29 correspond with the various positions to which the reversing pawl 35 is adjustable, and the graduated abutments 232-6 may be employed as an indicator to determine the desired adjustment of the reversing pawl, since the adjustments of both the advance and reverse feed pawls correspond. The gage 40, when adjusted to the limit of its throw in one direction (see Fig. 5), prevents the engagement of the reversing pawl and-the ratchet, the pawl traveling idly on the gage as the drive member 9 reciprocates.

Shifting the switch in the opposite direction interposes the stud 4.3 in the path of the reversing pawl 35 and releases the advancing pawl 16 for effective operation. One of the switch studs 42 is preferably elongated (Fig. 7) to seats 45 to hold the switch where adjusted.

What I claim as new, is
1. In a paper feeding device, the combination with a ratchet,'anda platen turning therewith; of means to turn the ratchet in either direction, including an operating drive,.having a stroke of constant length; a
pawl adapted to be advanced by the drive to turn the ratchet in one direction, said pawl normally lying in advanced position: and a second pawl adapted to be advanced by said drive to turn the ratchet in the opposite direction, and'normally lying in retracted position.
2. In a paper feeding device, the combination with a ratchet, and a platen'turning therewith; of means to turn the ratchet in either ,direction, including an operating drive, having a stroke of constant length; a
follower; yielding means connecting the fol'-' lower and drive; means to arrest the follower at different points in its stroke; a pawl connected with the follower and normally lving in advanced position; and a pawl-positively connected with-the drive and normally lying in retracted position.

and a ratchet-driving pawl connectedwith the follower, said follower normally having a length of travel coincident with the operating member.

In a paper feed mechanism, the co1nbination with a platen; and a ratchet; of a feed pawl to turn the ratchet; drive mechanism-v for the ratchet having a constant travel; andmeans to vary the line space intervals, including a follower normally in contact with the drive mechanism; andmeans to detain the follower at different points in its travel irrespective of the drive mechanism.
17. In a paper feed mechanism, the combination with a platen; a ratchet; and a feed pawl to turn-the ratchet; of a follower connected with the pawl; a drive mecha-- nism operable through a constant path to actuate the follower, and separable therefrom; and means to effect such separation.
18. In a paper feed, the combination with a platen;jand a ratchet; of drive mechanism operable through a path of constant length;
a follower dapted to contact the drive mechan sm, and separable therefrom; means to detain the follower at diii'erent points in its travel; and a feed pawl driven from the the drive mechanism.

In a paper feed, the combination with a platen ;-and a ratchet: of drive mechanism operable through a path of constant length; a feed pawl; a follower to operate the pawl, and normally in contact with the drive mechanism throughout travel; and a line space adjusting member having a series of shoulders shittable into the path of the follower to, arrest the latter at dilierent points and thereby effect a separation between the follower and its drive mechanism.

In a paper feeding-device, the comhination with a platen; of forward and reverse line space mechanisms, including pawls to turn the platen in one direction or the other; a driven member positively rocked in both directions and common to both pawls; a follower to operate with the driven member and connected to one of said pawls; a stop on the follower; a shiftabl'e member having a series of graduated abutments adjustable into and out of the path'ot the stop to vary the degree of rotation imparted by the last-named pawl to the ratchet; a controller having a slip connection'with the shiftablc member to ad j net the latter; means to lock the controller where adjusted; a linkage connecting the remaining pawl and driven member; means tending to shift both pawlsto efiective position; a switch mechanism to prevent the effective operation of either of said pawls and enable the other to operate; and a gage adjusted by said controller to vary the degree of rotation imparted to the platen by said remaining pawl.

In a paper feeding device, the combination with a platen; of forward and reverse line space mechanisms, including pawls to turn the platen in one direction or the other; a drive common to both pawls; ,a yielding connection between one of said pawls and the drive; adjustable meansto arrest the pawl at difierent points, to vary the line space interval through which the platen is turned by the pawl; a controller to govern said adjustable arresting means; and a gage also governed'lov said controller and operating the remaining pawl to vary the line space interval through which said remaining pawl drives the platen.
In a machine of the character set forth, the combination with a platen; of line space mechanism therefor, including a ratchet; advance and reverse feed pawlsto turn the ratchet in one directiou or the other; meansto drive the pawls. having a path of constant length; and line space regulating mechanism comprising a lll(.
