Specification 01 Letters Patent. I
Patented June c, 1922.
Application filed August 14, 1920. Serial No. 403,4 80.
To all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUSTA BARNETT and MILTON I.'STEINBERG, citizens of the I Hats, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a water proof covering for hats. I
An important object of the invention is to .e.provide a device' of the above mentioned character, adapted to be arranged upon the ordinary stiff sailor straw hat worn by men, and which will be highly convenient in use I and durable.
' Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
' Figure 1, is a Side elevation of a hat partly in section showing our invention attached thereto, and
Figure 2 is a,bottom view of the same.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the crown of a straw sailor hat, carrying the brim 6.
Our covering is, preferably formed of a molded section of rubber, embodying a crown covering portion 7, carryin a brim covering portion 8, these portions eingintegral. The outer edge of the brim covering portion is formed into a band 9, U-shaped in crqss-seotion, to receive the edge of the brim 6.
which. is secured to the inner portion of the cover, at the juncture of the rim portion 5 and brim portion 8, and serves to thicken and reinforcethe cover at this-point.
The numeral 12 designates a third reinforcing band, L-shaped in cross section,
which is secured to the interior of the crown in cross section 7, at its upper corner. by beingvulcanized thereto, or by other suitable means.
The reinforcing bands are preferably formed of rubber and are elastic to permit of the proper application of the device to the hat, but serve to reinforce and thicken the device, at the points of engagement with the hat, at sharp angles, thereby retaining the device upon the hat in proper shape, and at the same time dispensing with the liability of the device being torn. vThe bands are all secured to the inner side of the cover spacing the latter from the roughened surface of the hat, thus eliminating possible. injury thereto when in use.
It is to be imderstood that the form of our invention herewith shown and described is-to be taken as a preferred example of-the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of our invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
V Having thus described our invention, we
A rainroof hat covering including a body portlo'n formed from a single section of rubber, and including a crown'coverin portion and a brim covering portion, said brim covering portion having a band at its free end formed U-shaped in cross section, a rubber reinforcing band secured within the .first namedband-and formed U-shaped toreceive the edge of the brim, a second rubber reinforcing band formed L-shaped in cross section and secured to the interior of the cover at the juncture of the crown and brim covering portions, and a third rubber reinforcing band secured within the crown portion at the juncture of the horizontal and vertical portions thereof, all of said bands spacing the cover from the hat and serving to reinforce and thicken the former at their points of attachment.
In testimony whereof, we have aflixed our signatures in the presence of two wit- HBSSGS.
Witnesses Rosn SMITH, Ross KUnmcK.
