Be it known that l, EDWARD M. LoFrUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county ol Ramsey and State o'li liiinnesota, have invented a new and useul Pliers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to combination tools, and the object is to provide an improved combined pliers and wrench.

'ln the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view' of a pair of pliers provided with means for readily converting it into a wrench or preventing its spreading when used as pliers;

Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 8 and 9 designate the two levers or members or the pliers pivoted together by a bolt 1() which is movable in a transverse slot lll in one of the members so as to make the gap 12 between the jaws 8a and 9Ll changeable as to size for grasping extra large or extra small nuts, gas pipes or other articles.

The jaw 8a is provided at one side with an embossment 13 forming an angular tooth '14. Said tooth is arranged and adapted to engage in a serrated segmental face 15 of a cam 16 which is pivoted at 17 to the lever S) at a point almost opposite `trom the gap 12 relative to the pivot 10. The pivot 17 is provided with a spring washer 163 for holding the cam in any position to which it may be swung by the operator.

In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6 the head 10a of the n pivot bolt 10 is shown countersunk Aush with the member 9 so that the straight or plane cam 16 may swing over it. ln Fig. #l is shown that the head l0b of the bolt may project Vand the cam 16 may have an ol'fset 19 to make it clear the head. But as I have shown in Fig. 5 that the extra height may be obviated by giving the cam a secondV offset 20. `With either of these improvements l am able to swing the cam to the idle position shown in Fig. l, stopping against a lug 21 and being out of the way for using the pliers only, and when a nut, as 22 in Fig. 1, is to be turned the tool is converted into a wrench by swinging the cam 16 as 16 or similar position into engagement with the tooth 14: at such point of the segmental face as will correspond to the size of the'nut 22 operated on.

vWhat I claim is,-

l. The combination with a pair of pliers comprising two crossing jaw levers with a main pivot through the crossing, one or said levers having near the aw a lateral projection forming a tooth, a spring-held cam pivoted to the other jaw rearward ol the main pivot and having a serrated cam l'ace adapted to engage the tooth on the jaw or' the first-mentioned lever.

2. The structure specilied in claim l, and a lug on the lever carrying the cam for positively stopping the cain in its idle position.

3. The vstructure specied in claim V1, said pivot at the crossing of the levers having a head projecting beyond the adjacent lever, and said cam having a clearing to allow it to swing over said head.
