D. RICE.

Patented August t2, 1873.
tmf-Qt It t! t UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;4
DAVID RICE, OF RIGHFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEE-HIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,818, dated August 12,1873; application filed November 2,1872.
1 exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures oi' reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
This invention has relation to vbee-hives; and the novelty consists in lining the interior thereof with slate to prevent the moths from embedding themselves in the Wood.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the hive, having an inclined bottom. C designates movable honey-boxes; D, movable dividing board; E, cover for hive; F, keys to secure said cover to the hive; G, ilanges or guides between which the dividing-board slides; H, sliding board supporting honey-boxes; I, movable comb-frames having their lower parts inclined to it the hives; J, recessed cleats supporting the ends of the top bars of thecombframes, and keeping the latter at the proper distance apart. K designates slate coating or plates, covering every part of the interior of the hive excepting those parts of the combframes which receive the combs and the glass panel z.
The dark color of the slating renders the interior of the hive unattractive to moth, and, being impenetrable by them, it prevents them from lodging. The slate may be applied either in liquid form or in the form of thin plates.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bee-hive lined with liquid or natural slate, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID RICE.
Witnesses J. W. HOLLEMBEAK, H. M. CUNNINGHAM.
