IMPROVEMENT IN BEE-HIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,551, dated June 4, 1878; application filed May 11, me.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILL G. ERB, of Hummelstown, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bee-Hives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my bee-hive. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing interior. Fig. 3 is perspective View of top; and Fig. 4 is a vertical central sectional view of the same.
The nature of my invention relates to the construction of a bee-hive, as will be hereinaftir more fully set forth, and pointed out in the e aims.
The annexed drawings, to which reference ismade, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the bottom of the hive, arranged in an inclined position forward by being supported at the rear by a cross-bar, B. G is the front of the brood-chamber, provided at the bottom with a slide, a, for increasing or diminishing the size of the bee-entrance b, or to entirely close the same by reversing the slide, which fits and moves in guides d d on v the front 0, as shown.
At the back of the brood-chamber is a frame, D, also secured to the bottom A, and a side piece, E, connects the rear and front on one side, said side piece being extended upward the entire height of the hive-that is to say, to include the honey-chamber on top.
To the side piece E is hinged a back, F, which is of the same height as said side piece, and when closed forms the back for both the brood and honey chambers.
The opposite side of the brood-chamber is closed by means of a door, G, hinged to the front 0, and both doors, G and F, are fastened when closed by means of hooks h h.
H represents the top of the hive, to which are permanently secured the front piece 0 and side piece G, and these are fastened to the side E and back door F by hooks ff, as shown. The honey-chamber can, therefore, be thrown open by turning the top either to the right or left, as desired.
In the brood-chamber are a number of combframes, I I, supported upon rabbets, M, on the front 0 and back frame D. This back frame is closed by a glass plate, K.
On top of the frames I are the honey-boxes L L, arranged in two tiers, as shown.
This bee-hive is simple and cheap in construction and is convenient for the bee-keeper to observe the progress of the work of the bees; and he can open either the brood or the honey chamber without disturbing the other.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bee-hive, the top H, provided with the front 0 and side G permanently attached thereto and connected by hooks to the body of the hive, so as to be removable therefrom, substantially as shown.
2. The within-described bee-hive, consisting of the inclined bottom A, with stationary front 0, side E, and back frame D, the doors G F, and top H, with the front 0 and side G prmanently attached thereto, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILL C. EBB.-
Witnesses:
J. B. ORIsT, HIRAMI LANDIS.
