JOHNr I. oAssELAND WILLIAM QUIN, orEAfro'N, omo.
Letters .Patent No.' .7 6,602, dated April 14, 1868. y
lIhrecivifziiirnr'IN BBE-arves.
vT0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it. known that we, 'JOHN I. CAssEL amlwrnnmn QUIN, of Eaton,'i`nthe eountyof Preble, and iii-the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bee-Hives; and do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying 'drawings' and the letters of reference marked thereon. -In vthe annexed drawings, making a part of this specioation- Figure 1 represents ai longitudinal vertical section, and V Figure 2 represents across-section ot' a bee-hive, eind the honey-boites contained therein.'
A represents the outside bott or bee-hive, of any desired dimensions, provided withsnitable legs, and having a hole, w, through the'front, and cleats, c c, lon the inside, for the boxes, B, to rest on, and also :having a door, D, hinged .to one of the sides, making the back side of thehive. v v
C represents the bottom-ofv the hive, end is composed of' two pieces hinged together, as seen at K,and pivoted to the sides ofthe hive, n eair the boel: of the same. The front edge ot the bottom, C, may be adjusted so as to give any desired angle'to the bottom, by means ofthe buttons o o, which are attached to its under side, and notches inthe sidesot the liive near the bottom. I I
B B` represent'honey-boir'es, ot any required dimensions, to, tl the inside of the hive A, and slide in or out of place, and rest on the cleats c c. vThe bottom `orlower box, B,is provided with a. number of holes, ff, in
its bottom, to admit the bees, and with holes, d d, through the top, to correspond with the holes 'olol through the bottom oi' the box above, for the` bees, that they may pass from .one boxA to the other. Y The lower bo'x is also supplied with cross-sticks, H'H, and with a hole, x', to correspond with the h'ole, vze, 'in tl1e-front of the hive A. 'i There is hinged to the bottom'ofvthe, lower honey-box B," a movable door or shutter, B, which may closed or brought up against the botto'm of said box, or do'wn at right anglestherewith and against the bottom,'(}, as may be desired.
'lhebutton g is adjusted to the'tron't o'f' the outsi-de'ot` the hive, for thepurpose ot' making convenient door or cover for the holen, which is designed ns a convenient opening from the outsideidireot to the honeyn the inside of the boxA B,"and through which-a.Y stick, rod, or4 wire 4may be insertedto break the comb of'the honey inside, .whenever tlie`bees belonging to'the'hive Ina-y-be on a raid to rob a neighboring hive, 'thereby compelling them to repair damages at h'ome, and thus prevent the robbery o't' other' bees and hives.
It will readily be seen that between the bottom-board C and the under side of the box B there is a. chamber, llirough'uhich the bees, moths; ort-her insects'must pass before getting into the honey-boxes B B.A Itis a fact, determined by experiment, that moths cannot crawl along the under side of a smooth surface, and as the holes ff are' through the bottom ofA the honey-box 13,"away from either side oi' the hive, it is obvious that moths cannot get into the honey-box B, and shouldv they crawl up the inclined plane or bottom, C, and into the chamber between it and the bottom of tbe honey-box B,' theycaii readilybc swept out by means of the hinged door,iR, being lifted up from behind, andvletting thebottom, C, down at the front side, by means ot' the buttons o o, or by detaching the bottom,C, entirely from the hive, by means' ot' the adjustable pins with'which` itis pivoted thereto. i
Havingtbus fully described-our invention, what we claim as neiv, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinged-bottom C,in combination with the perforated bottom of the honey-box B, all constructed substantially as end for the purpose set forth.
In vtestimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 26th day of November, 1867'.
