Description

HANNAH P.1DY.
Knitting-Holders.
Patented August 12 1873.
WiFNEEBEE AM PHore-uTHomm/c 00. M). (ossnmvsls PRanEs) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANNAH P. JOY, OF SOUTH BERWIGK JUNCTION, MAINE.
llViPROVEMENT IN KNITTING-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,796, dated August 12, 1873 application filed- May 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANNAH I. JoY, of South Berwick Junction, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Knitting; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improved device for holding knitting and protectin g the knitting-needles; and it consists in a slotted tube provided with a movable cap or cover, in which the needles are placed, the knitting projecting downward through the slot so as to prevent them from being injured or dropping stitches, while the work is being carried in the pocket.
Figure 1 is a side view of my device with the work in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder and its cap.
1 represents a tube, of suitable length, having the slot 2 cut in its side for any desired distance, and to which is secured, by a small cord or chain, 3, a cap or cover, 4.
When the knitting is placed in the pocket the needles are apt to get bent and broken,
and drop stitches, or to come out of the work entirely, and thus cause a great waste of time and trouble. In order to prevent this I remove the cap from the tube, slip in the neodles, letting the work hang down through the slot, as shown in Fig. 1, replace the cap, and the needles are not only held in place in the work, but perfectly protected under all circumstances.
I am aware that various devices have heretofore been applied for the protection of the needles, and I do not, therefore, broadly claim a protecting device; but never before has a tube, which will wholly inclose the needles, been used as here shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A knitting-holder, consisting of the tube 1 provided with slot 2 through which the work projects, and a suitable cap or holding device, 4, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of May, 1873.
HANNAH P.'JOY.
