Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEiGE.
GABRIEL M. GERNSHYM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN LEGGINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,385, dated February 10, 1874; application filed January 16, 1874.
To all whom it may oowernf Be it known that 1, GABRIEL M. GERNsHYM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leggings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same in the plane a fr, Fig. 1. Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
rlhis invention is designed as an improvenient upon the Letters Patent granted to :me on the 13th day of January, 1874; and it coni sists in a knitted legging provided with a pocket, produced during the operation of knitling, and made to receive a gathering-cord,
which lies concealed in the pocket, while its ends pass out thereof in front of the legging, in such a manner that, by means of said gatherin g-cord, the legging can be readilyT and conveniently tied after it has been put on. and when the legging is taken off the gathering-cord remains in the pocket, and is not liable to drop out or to get mislaid or lost.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a legging, which is knitted of wool or any other suitable fibrous material. Said legging is provided with a pocket, a, near its upper end, which pocket is produced during the operation of knitting, and made of sufficient width to receive a cord, b, of more or less thickness. This cord is intended for tying the legging after the same has been put on, and I use, by preference, a cord inade of wool or other soft and elastic material, which is made of such a thickness that it is not liable to cut in the limb to which the legging is to be tied. The pocket a, therefore, must be made of a width equal to two or more of the meshes produced during the operation of knitting. Thecord bis passed through the pocket a, so that the same lies concealed therein, while its ends are made to hang down in front of the legging. By pulling the ends of the cord in opposite directions, the pocket is gathered up, and the legging can be conveniently fastened in the required position, and, in order to prevent the cord from being drawn out of the pocket, I secure tassels, or other suitable devices, to its ends after the same has been drawn through the pocket. If the legging is taken 0H', therefore, the cord ,is not liable to get lost or mislaid.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A knitted legging provided with a pocket, a, produced during the process of knittin g, and of a width equal to two or more of the meshes, in combination with the gatheringcord b, all constructed and arranged for operation substantially as and for the purpose specified.
