T 0 all whom it maylcomem Be it known that ANDREW GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Brie and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Packets or Cartons, of which the following is a specification. f

This inventionrelates to packets or cartons suitable for containing matches and other like articles and is peculiarly adapted to be used as an advertising medium.

One important object of the invention is to provide an improved general construction of devices of this character and especially to improve and simplify the construction of match packet disclosed in. my prior Patent Number 1,351,242, patented August 31, 1920.

A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of packet or carton constructed from a single sheet of cardboard or the like.

A third important object of the invention is to provide'an improved double packet or carton constructed from a" single sheet of cardboard or the like.

A fourth important object of the invention is to provide an improved double packet having leaves folding into the packet for carrying matches, the whole being constructed of a single sheet of cardboard or the like. 1 v

A fifth important object of the invention is to provide an improved packet of this class having improved -means for holding the packet normally shut, said means also functioning to hold the packet attached to a box or package as of cigarettes.

\Vith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of' construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the-accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.

ment of means for both holding the packet closed and attaching it to a package of cigarettes or the like. r

In all of the embodiments of the invention herein illustrated each packet is' formed from a sheet of cardboard or the like and the blank consists of twoor more parts defined each from each by'a fold line whereby the adjacent parts have hingedly connected relation. In every instance it will be seen that at least one of the connected portions is stamped or pressed to form a shallow, tray like part. i v In the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 this shallow tray is shown at 10 and on one edge thereof is hingedly carried a flat member 11 which may be called the attaching flap or back flap. On the other edge is hingedly carried a flap 12 carrying matches 13. The back of the part 11 may. be coated with a suitable adhesive so that it may be attached to a'match packet P or a similar part 11 of another packet by means of such adhesive. Moreover the parts lOand 11 are connected.

In the form just described the elastic strand 14 may be positioned through slits 15 formed at the junction of the parts 10 and 11 as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, these slits terminating in eyes 16 offset to one side of the slits. The form shown in Figures 3 and 4: is very similar to that just described except that the'part 12 is omitted and the matches 13 are fastened directly to the part 11. Moreover in this part the elastic strand has its ends separate, one end of each strand being secured to the art 11 through a hole 17 near its edge whi e the other end passes through the hole 16 in part 11 and through the similar hole in the part 10 and is there secured, By this arrangement a match packet P may be inserted as shown in Figures 3 and 4: so that this elastic member serves the double function of holding the cover closed and of holding the packet in position on a package of cigarettes or the like.

In the form shown in Figures 5 and 6 the blank consists of two of the shallow, tray like portions 10 and the flap portion 11 connects the two being oined thereto by hinged lines 18. In this form it will be seen from Figure 6 that the connective side of one portion 12 is on one side of the blank while the connective side of the other portion 10 is on the other side of the blank. 1

In the form shown in Figures 7 and 8 the form is identical with that of Figure 5 except that end flaps 19 are also employed so that the matches may be secured thereto. It is especially to be noted that the form of Figure 5 provides no less than four surfaces on each to display advertising matter while the form of Figure 7 provides no less than eight such display surfaces.

In the form shown in Figure 9 the part 11 is eliminated or rather modified to form a second shallow, tray-like portion 10,the two portions being defined by a fold line 20 forming a hinge. Tabs 21 may be applied to the edges of the proper parts wherever desired and all of the forms may be provided with suitable means to hold them yieldably closed although such means are not shown in each instance, being exemplified clearly in the forms of Figures 1 to 4 inclusive. i

There has thus been provided a simple I and efiicient device of the kind described and It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore deemed necessary to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as Iproperly come within the scope claimed.

1. In a carton, a pair of spaced body portions formed of cardboard like material and each pressed to form a shallow tray, a flapbetween said body portions, said fiap'and body portions being formed integrally and for each of said body portions.

2. In a carton, a pair of shallow, tray like body portions facing in opposite directions, and a flap hingedly connected from one edge of one body portion to the opposite edge of the other body portion said body portions being folded one on one side and the other on the other side of'said flap whereby said flap constitutes a closure for the body portions common to both of them.

3Q In a carton, a body portion formed. of a piece of cardboard like material pressed to form a shallow, tray like body, a cover portionformed integrally with the body portion and hingedly connected thereto, and a plurality of elastic strands each having one end connected to the cover adjacent its free edge and the other end passing through the cover adjacent the body and connected to the body whereby the strands yieldably hold the parts closed and whereby that. portion of the strands crossing the cover forms means for attaching the device to a package. 7
