WHEELED TOY.
Miniac.
Application filed August 17, '1920. Serial No. 404,058.
To all wlw/m, it may 00m/cem.'
Be it kno-wn that I, GILBERT A. MCCREARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edinburg, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer*- tain new and useful Improvements in `Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheeled toys and has as its general object to provide a toy of this class comprising a figure, which in the operation of the toy, will go through the motions of jumping a rope, the toy being designed to be drawn about and operative connection being provided between one of its wheels and the support for the ligure for accomplishing the movement stated.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view'of the toy embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of 'the toy,
1F igure 3 is a View in side elevation illustrating different positions of the .figure in full and dotted lines.
rlhe toy embodyinge the present invention includes a base or platform which is indicated by the numeral 1 and which'l is pro vided upon its under side with spindles 2 upon which are mounted wheels 3 so that the platform may be drawn by a suitable cord 1- over any plane surface. The numeral 5 indicates a pair of spaced uprights which are mounted upon the top of the platform or base 1 and journaled in the upper ends of these uprights is a shaft 6 which may be- ,formed, if desired, from a suitable length of wire or small rod material. The intermediate portion of this shaft is provided with I a crank indicated by the numeral 7 and this cranked portion of the shaft fits loosely through an opening 8 formed in the shoulder portion of a toy figureA which is indicated in general by the numeral 9 and which represents a person. In this manner, the iigure 9 is loosely suspended from the crank portion of the 'ishaft so that it may have freeswinging movement, and the said figure is provided with loosely pivoted members 10 which areA formed to represent the 'lower limbs of a. person. The arms of the figure are indicated by the numeral 11 and the said arms are lixedly secured at their inner ends to the crank portion 7 of the shaft 6. The element which is to represent the rope within' which the gure is to apparently jump, is
indicated in general by the numeral 12 and this element is preferably formed from a single length of suitable wire material which cured to the extremities ofthe arm members 11, in any suitable manner.
As stated above, the arm members 11 are fixed to the crank portion of the shaft 6 whereas the body of the ligure is looself suspended from this portion of the shaft, the body being located between the arm members as most clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, 'and being thus confined so that it cannot become laterally displaced upon the shaft. At this point it will be understood that when the shaft is rotated, the body member will be carried around with the crank portion and this will impart a certain degree of movement' to the lower limb members 10 to somewhat simulatel the nate. ural movement of the limbs in jumping a rope, the arm members 11 being swung around in a circle and carrying with them the element 12wvhich represents the rope, this element being swung in a circle about the body and clearing the head and* limbs of the body i'n its rotary movement.,
In order that rotary motion may be imparted to the shaft 6, a pulley 15 is fixed upon one end of the shaft and a pulley 16 is fixed upon 'that one of the rear wheels which' is located at the corresponding side of the platform 1, a cord or any other suit-x able type of belt 17 being'trained about the pulleys 15 and 1G.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a wheeled toy, a base, wheels supporting the same for travel, a crank shaft mounted above the base. spaced aim members rigidly secured at their inner ends to the cranked portion of the shaft. means for rotating the shaft from one of the wheels, a figure loosely suspended 'from the said cranked portion of the shaft between the arm members, and a rope'simulating member comprising side portions and a connecting, portion, the said side portions of the said member being secured at their free ends to the outer ends of the arm members and forming continuations thereof in diametrically opposite direction to the bend of the crank portion.
2. A toy having a' base with a pair of spaced uprights and wheels supporting the Mbase for travel, a shaft with a central crank and having driving connection with Said 5 Wheels and being carried 0n the free end of said upriglits` a igme'with jointed legs freely suspended from said crank, a pair of arms for said figure rigidly secured upon said crank and extending in diametrieally opposite direction ofthe crank. and a loop 10 connecting said arms and fQrming continuations thereof in the length direction.
I-n testimony whereof l affix my signature. GILBERT A. 'MCGREARY [L S
