UNITED STATES AUGUST HEYSE, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,714, dated August 12, 1873; application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST HEYSE, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Knob-Latch, of which the following is a specification:
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical elevation of my knob-latch as placed in the door, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improvement in the class of door-locks having a sliding spindle with wedge-shaped pieces attached to it. The invention consists in the arrangement of guide-pieces in connection with the bolt and spindle, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents the door, into which is fitted suitably the lock-plates B, which carry between them the latch-bolt O, band-spring l), and, transversely, the doorspindle E, having knobs F, and washers l. The plates B are connected by screws and supports a in suitable manner, and provided with slotted perforations for the passage of door-spindle E. The straight piece 12, guides, in connection with the edge of rectangular piece cl applied to plate B, the bolt 0, guidepiece d embracing also partly knob-spindle E. Band-spring D is coiled around a stud, f, of plate B, which is flanged and riveted or screwed to face-plate g of the lock. ,The latchbolt (3 consists of three parts: Head h, shank t, and wedge extension r. The head h is considerably larger than the shank part, and is acted upon at its rear side by the end of bandspring D. The wedge part It extends sidewise in a right angle from shank z, forming, with guide-piece d, a square aperture for the knob-spindle E. Two wedge-projections, G, are placed centrally, but in opposite directions, on spindle E, and act from both sides on wedge extension k of bolt 0. The latter is, therefore, pressed back Whether the knob is pressed or pulled, opening thereby the door. Spring D presses bolt 0 forward again as soon as the knob is released. The whole lock is let into the door, which is provided, as well as side face plate 6, with slotted perforations, like plates B, being compactly arranged therein, and may be furnished cheaply on account of the simplicity of its construction.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The rectangular guide-piece d, and the extension piece K of the bolt embracing the spindle E, and the straight guide-piece b in combination therewith, all as shown and described.
AUGUST HEYSE.
