W. M. BROOKS. SEALING MEANS. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 24, 1921.

SEALING MEANS.
aiaees.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1%22.
Application filed September 24, 1921. Serial No. 502,963.
To all whom it may cmtcemz:
Be it known that l, Winrnnn M. BROOKS, a citizen 0'1 the United States, and a resident of South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing li ieans, of which the following is a spe iiication.
This invention relates to sealing devices of the character in which a tell-tale member is bent back upon itself Or upon another member, the bendin taking place in the plane ot a weakened zone so that when said tell-tale member is unbent the metal is fractured and the member detached thereby thus revealing that the seal has been tampered with.
T he weakened zone has heretofore been produced by scoring or grooving the material, the groove being of equal depth throughout its length, and with this construction diiiiculty has been experienced in obtaining requisite degree of weakness without, at the some time, rendering the material so weak as to fracture the material during the looking and sealing operation.
I have found that by varying the depth oi the groove longitudinally with its deepest part at its center portion and shallowest parts at its ends, the integrity of the material oi the tell-tale member is assured when the member is bent during the sealing or looking operation and, at the same time, fracture oi? the material when unbending the same is invariably effected.
in the accom )anying drawings the invention is disclosed in a concrete and several preferred forms in which Fig. l is a plan view of a sealing member embodying the invention;
Fig. is plain view of a modified form of sealing member embodying the invention;
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the weakened zone;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the grooves;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View through the weakened zone.
The character of the sealing medium is immaterial and I have shown, in Fig. 1 as an illustration of the use to which the invention may be put, the type of sealing medium disclosed in Patents Nos. 1.355% and 1380038 and, in Fig. 2, the haracter of the sealing medium disclosed in application Ser. No. l90213 and it is therefore unnecessary to describe the construction and operation of these devices in detail except to state that. 1 is a tell-tale member which may be integral with a main member 2 or separate therefrom and is provided with a weakened zone produced by one or more grooves 3.
The groove, as here shown, has a curved bottom the curve being longitudinal of the groove and deepest at its center part dand shallowest at its ends 5. it will also be noted that said groove is also wider at its central portion than at its end portions.
I claim 1. In a sealing device, a tell-tale member having a weakened zone, the weakening consisting of a groove of varying depth longitudinally with its deepest part at the center portion and shallow parts at its ends.
2. in a sealing device, a tell-tale member having a weakened zone, the weakening consisting of a groove, the bottom of which is curved longitudinally with its deepest part at its center portion and shallow parts at its ends.
Signed at New York city, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State oi New York. this 22nd day of September, 1921.
WINFRED MUDGE BROOKS.
