DRILL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented O t. 12 1920 Application filed February 24, 1919, Serial No. 279,001. Renewed April 6, 1920. Serial No. 371,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .IIENRI BERNAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of- California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drills, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rock drills and the like wherein a detachable bit operates in conjunction with a slotted stock to prevent splitting of the stock when a pressure is applied to the cutting edge of the bit.
The primary object of the present inven' tion is to provide an improved rock drill havin a detachable bit.
A Eurther object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described having improved means for attaching a bit to a slotted stock in such a manner that a pressure applied to the cutting edge of the bit will tend to move the portions of the stock beyond the slot toward each other and thereby prevent splitting of the stock.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for securing a bit within a slotted stock, said means being adapted to facilitate the insertion and removal of the bit.
Other objects and advantages-will here-. inafter more fully appear.
. I accomplish these several objects by means of the improved device disclosedin the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of ref erence are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which: d Iiigure 1 is an elevation of my improved ri l;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on I line 33 of Fig. 2 in the direction indicated;
Fig. 4 is a bottom view ofFig. 1;
Fig. 5 is atop plan view of a bit removed from the stock; A
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the stock with thebit removed; and
Figs. 8 and 9 are an elevation and bottom view of a modified form of bit.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a stock bored centrally as at 2 and provided with a centrally disposed transverse slot 3 whose walls converge toward the end of said stock 1. The ends of the stock 1 beyond the open end of the slot 3 are beveled anddiverge from said slot 3 toward the sides of the stock 1 as at 4.
The stock 1 is also provided with annular slot 3, the purpose of which will after he more fully set forth.
A b1t 7, provided with at "least one transhereinverse" cutting edge 8, has beveled surfaces 9 to engage the bevel surfaces 4 of the stock:
- a pressure is applied to the cutting edge8 the inner end of the extension 11 will not be forced against the inner end of the said slot 3, to prevent splitting of the stock 1.
As the slot 3 is narrower at its outer end the shape of saidslot will prevent a longitudinal movement of the extension 11 of the bit 7 within said stock 1.
The extension has formed on its sides recesses 12 which re ister with the annular grooves 6 in the stoc l.
Rings 14 are rotatably mounted within the grooves 6 and recesses 12 when the beveled surfaces 9 and 4 are in engaging relation. Each ring 14 is provided with a gap 16 smaller than the width of the slot 3, the ends of said rings 14 being beveled as at 17 to facilitate insertion and removal of the extension 11 within the slot 3 when removing or inserting a bit. 1
The bit .7 is bored transverselyas at 18 andhas a longitudinal bore 19 through the cutting edge 8 and. intersecting the first mentioned bore 18. The surfaces'of the extension 11 are provided with recesses or grooves 21 which operate in conjunction grooves 6 arranged between the ends of the with the central bore 2 of the stock 1 to pro- I vide a passage for water when drilling.
To remove the bit the gaps 16 in both rings 14 are moved to register with either end of the slot 3. As the gaps 16 in said rings 14 are slightly smaller than the width or thickness of the extension 11 it is evident that said rings 14 will still prevent a movement of said extension 11 within the slot 3.
But, by applying a slight pressure of the end of the extension 11 against the beveled ends 17 of the rings. 14 said rings will be slightly expanded to increase the width of the gap to an extent sufiicient to permit the passage of the extension 11 through said gaps.
' In replacing a bit the end ofthe extension is similarly pressed against the beveled ends 1. 17 of the rings 14 to expand said rings an extent sufiicient to permit the entrance of said extension 11.
The probability of both gaps inadvertently registering with the same end of the slot 3 simultaneously when said gaps have been spaced apart is exceedingly remote, and should the condition occur it is. evident that the gap 16 would be insufficient for the passage of the extension and the bit would be retained in position.
In operation, when a pressureis applied to the cutting edge'8 of the bit such a pressure is transmitted to the beveled surfaces 9 of said bit which engage the beveled snr-' faces4 beyond the open end of the slot 3 of the stock 1 and tend to move said ends toward instead of away from each other thereby tending to prevent splitting the stock 1. In Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings, I have disclosed a modified form of bit 7 provided with two cutting edges 8' in the well known cruciform type which may be used advantageously with the drill.
5 Having ,thus described my invention, what -I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- .ters Patent, is
1.'A drill comprising a stock having a transverse slot therein, the wallsof said slot converging toward the end of the stock; a bit having a extension shaped to fit the slot and detachably engaging said slot and rings rotatably mounted upon the stock and the extension and having gaps therein, said gaps being smaller than the thickness of the bit extension.
