CHARLES E. O. SEIBERT, 05 ST. LU'UIE I'IIISSO'UPJI.
SPAS? OR LEGGING.
EAEI BAZL Application filed January 23, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns F. 0. Sinnnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the Stateof Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spats or Leggings, of which the following is a specification containing a full,
clear and exact description reference bein' had to the accompanying drawing, forming a pxart hereof.
l Iy invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and distinctly claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved shoe-covering or spat, combined with an integral legging or puttee, which will be especially adapted for use by ladies and children, but which may also be used by men; and which article will be of low cost, simple and easily applied and removed, and which will present a stylish, well-fitting, and ornamental appearance upon the foot and leg of the wearer.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side-elevation of my invention, as it appears in use upon both feet and both limbs of a lady.
Fig. 2 is an inside plan-view of the device, opened out, to show the interior construction, and
Fig. 3 is a side-elevation of the device, partly closed or folded.
In the form of my invention that is herein illustrated, the numeral 1 designates the usual form of an over-gaiter, spat or shoecovering, having formed integral with the upper edge thereof a'legging, puttee, or legextension 2.
These may be formed, as shown, of a series of separate pieces or sections, united at adjacent edges by suitable seams or stitching 3; or the over-gaiter and legging may be made by cutting or pressing same from a single solid piece of material, and thereby eliminate the said seams or stitching, and at the same time give the article the proper shape to fit the foot and leg of the wearer thereof.
Said over-gaiter 1 is provided with the usual heel-opening 4. and holding-down or instep-strap 5.
The inner flap 6 of the combined article is adapted to be folded inwardly, as shown in Figs. '2 and 3, over the instep and leg of the wearer, the outer or closing) flap Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1922.
Serial no. 531,230.
7 is to be folded against, and made to overlap the adjacent over-gaiter 1 and its leg-extension 2, when the article is in use.
A. long strap 8, which may be secured at one of its ends to the spat or over-gaiter portion of the said overlapping closing-flap 7, by means of stitching or other fasteningmeans 9, or which may be formed integral with said flap, forms an extension of the latter, and (in use) it is passed therefrom downwardly and under the shank of the shoe, and thence upwardly over the instep of the foot, and is thence made to spirally engage around and upon the overlapped closed portions of the said legging, puttee, or legextension 2, in separated convolutions, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1.
The free upper end of the said spiral-strap 8 is to be secured upon and to the exterior of the adjacent leg-extension 2, by means of a common buckle or other fastening-means 10, so that said strap may be pulled tightly around the leg, and then fastened while tight, to not only assist in securing the leg and foot sections of the article in position, but also to prevent wrinkling of said strap and consequent unsightly appearance of the article.
Of course, said buckle or fastening-means 10 should permit of ready adjustment of said strap 8, in tightening, loosening, or removing same; and I do not limit myself to a buckle for this purpose.
Internal fastening-means, such as the ballpart 11, and the socket-member 12 of common snaps, should also be placed at the upper portion of the overlapping leg-extension 2, to hold the parts while the said strap 8 is being wound around the leg and shoe members.
Instead of making the said long strap 8 flat, as shown, it may be round, in the form of a cord or braid; which is more or less elastic, as is the strap when made of flat material; and if desired, the said strap may be made of elastic material, in whole or for a portion of its length. i
In case the fastening-means 10 for the free end of said strap 8 is in the form of a common buckle having a tongue, a series of holes may be made in said strap to receive said tongue, in adjusting said strap.
Common stiffening-means, such as whalebone, or stifiening sections of cloth or other material 14;, may be used to stifi'en the various parts; and in the present illustration the said sections of material l4- are in the form of friction-cloth, secured in place by means of lue or paste.
aid sections of? friction-cloth 14 not only act as stiffening-means but they also prevent slipping of the overlapped parts upon each other. The same function Would be performed (so far as slipping is concerned) by placing additional snap- members 11 and 12 on the parts Which might slip out of shape.
I claim 2- A combined spat and legging, consisting of integral over-gaiter and legsections having overlapping closing-flaps, and a long continuation or". one of the said closing-flaps; one end of said long continuation being fixed to the outer closing-flap of the over-gaiter section, and constructed and arranged to be passed therefrom downwardly and under the arch. of the foot, and thence upwardly and across the instep, and then spirally Wound around overlapping flaps and body of said leg-section, in separated convolutions; and fastening-means at the free (or upper) end of said long continuation.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
