Patented Mar. 21, 1939 UNiTED STATES PATENT orrlce 6 Claims.
My invention relates to waterproof spats and has particular reference to spats worn over ordinary shoes for the protection of a Wearers ankles.
My invention has for its object to provide spats which can be fitted tightly over ordinary shoes so as to prevent any excess of water or dirt from penetrating into the space between the material of the spats and the shoes, and to provide a still greater degree of protection than was disclosed in'my Patent No. 2,099,476 of Nov. 16, 1937, and mypatent application Serial No. 178,459, filed Dec. 7, 1937. For this purpose I provide a plurality of straps extending across the sole of a shoe between the edges of the spats. I also provide reinforced edges for the spats adapted to fit snugly against the sides of the shoe. I also provide the straps with buckles or buttons for drawing them tightly against the spats and for stretching the edges of the spats lengthwise so as to cause them to fit tightly against the edges of the soles of the shoes.
Another object of my invention is to provide the spats with edges fitting against the upper sides of the edges of the soles of the shoes, theedges-of the spats having relatively thin flexible extensions or flaps covering the edges of the soles.
Another object of my invention is to provide the upper portions of the spats with slits which can be closed by ordinary slide fasteners, the latter being covered from inside and outside with suitable flexible flaps, the outer flaps having additional snap fasteners for removably holding them against the spats.
Another object of my invention is to provide spats with a plurality of detachable ornamental straps extending across the front sides of the spats, the straps being of various colors which can be selected so as to match other garments of a wearer of the spats.
Still another object of my invention is to provide spats having bellows-shaped collapsible middle portions, partly for ornamental purpose, partly to enable the spats to be stretched to a greater length when so needed.
My invention is more fully described in the accompanying specification and drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side view of my spat on a mans shoe.

My spat consists of an enclosure i made of a flexible, preferably waterproof material, such as rubberized cloth, etc. It covers the ankle portion of a Wearers foot and the upper portion of a L shoe down to its sole 2 and heel 3. The side of the enclosure I has a slit which can be closed by an ordinary slide fastener 6 preferably of the Zipper type. The heel portion of the spat enclosure has an elastic band 5 tightly enclosing the heel 3. The lower edges of the enclosure are reinforced by an elastic bead 5 and are connected by a sole portion 7 of the enclosure extending to the band 5. Additional resilient or elastic straps 8 are fitted over the sole 7 at the instep portion of the shoe. This modification is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs 3 and 4 represent another modification in which detachable straps 9 and Ill are provided under the shank portion of the shoe. The upper portion of the enclosure I I has a closing flap I2 with a snap fastener I3.
Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a spat in which the enclosure I4 is opened at the bottom and provided with a toe closure I5 curved as shown and bent inwardly as shown in Fig. 5 in dotted lines. Straps I6 and Il join the edges at the instep, the strap I6 being curved as shown in direction opposite to the curvature of the toe closure I5, the strap I6 and the closure I5 being adapted to stretch the edges of the enclosure I4 over the edges of the shoe sole 2, the edges being drawn together in parallel relation to each other as shown in Fig. 6. The bead 6 is shown in detail in Fi 7.
A modified spat is shown in Fig. 8 of a type resembling a Russian boot. The enclosure I8 has a number of flexible folds or corrugations I9 in the middle which can be straightened out to increase the length of the spat.
Another modification is shown in Figs. 9, 10,
and 11. The enclosure 20 has straps 2| and 22 extending from the lower edges and crossing the sole 2 of the shoe, the free ends of the straps being bent over the upper portion of the toe portion of the enclosure and detachably attached by snap fasteners 23. The straps are attached.
alternately to the enclosure 20 as shown, the attached ends being of an enlarged shape so as to draw wider portions of the enclosure against the sole 2 of the shoe.
A modification shown in Fig. 12 has a slit in the upper portion which'can be closed by a slide fastener or Zipper 24. The Zipper is protected inside by a flap 25 and on the outside by a flap 26 attached at one side to the enclosure and having snap fasteners 21 at the other side.
The straps may fully encircle the toe portion of the enclosure as shown in Fig. 13 where a strap 28 has a buckle 29 for drawing the strap tightly against the shoe.
The enclosure til, as shown in Fig.14, may have a relatively heavy edge 3| fitting into the space between the upper side of the edge of the sole 2 and the toe portion 32 of a shoe. A relatively thin flap 33 extends down from the enclosure and covers the edge of the sole 2. A strap 34 has an undercut 35 opposite the edge of the sole 2 in order to enable the strap to be bent at a sharp angle as shown. The strap may be slidably fitted in strips 3% attached at their ends to the enclosure 37 as shown in Figs. 15 and 16.
V The enclosure 38, Fig. 17, maybe provided with detachable ornamental straps 39 with snap fasteners til at both ends. These straps may be made of different colors to match the wearer's dress, this arrangement being especially suitable for womens spats.
I claim as my invention:
1. A waterproof spat comprising a flexible enclosure for the upper portion of a shoe, a bridge member connecting the edges of the enclosure under the toe portion of the shoe forming a pocket for the latter, a plurality of elastic straps connecting the edges of the enclosure under the shank portion of the shoe, the front strap having forward curved ends adapted to pull the edges of the enclosure rearward thereby drawing the edges tightly over theedges 0f the sole of the shoe.
2. A waterproof spat comprising a flexible enclosure for the upper portion of a shoe, a bridge member connecting the edges of the enclosure under the toe portion of the shoe forming a pocket for the latter, a plurality of elastic straps connecting the edges of the enclosure under. the shank portion of the shoe, the front strap having forward curved ends adapted to pull the edges of the enclosure rearward thereby drawing the edges tightly over the edges of the sole of the" shoe, and reinforcing beads extending along the lower edges of the enclosure between the toe bridge and strap. l
3. A waterproof spat comprising a flexible enclosure for the upper 'portion of a shoe, a bridge member connecting the edges of the enclosure under the toe portion of the shoe forming a pocket for the latter, a plurality of elastic straps connecting the edges of the enclosure under the shank portion of the shoe, the front strap having forward curved ends adapted to pull the edges of the enclosure rearward thereby drawing the edges tightly over the edges of the sole of the shoe, and reinforcing beads extending along the lower edges of the enclosure between the toe bridge and strap in a substantially parallel direction when in a free state being'thereby adapted to tightly press against the edges of the sole of the shoe. r
4. A waterproof spat comprising a flexible enclosure for the upper portion of the shoe, a plurality of straps extending over the sole of the shoe and over the toe portion of the. enclosure and adapted to draw the enclosure tightly against the shoe, and means to slidably guide the straps on the enclosure.
5. A waterproof spat comprising a flexible en-- closure for the upper portion of a shoe down to it sole, straps extending over the sole'between the edges of the enclosure, and means to slidably support the straps on the enclosure, the straps beingiundercut at the points .of flexure over the' edges of the sole.
6. A waterproof spat comprising a flexible enclosure for the upper portion of a shoedown to its sole, the lower edges of the enclosure being adapted to abut the upper sides of the edges of the sole, relatively thin flaps extending from the enclosure over the edges of the sole, and straps adapted to draw the enclosure, tightly against. the shoe.
