Specification of Letters Patent.
FFlCE.
GEORGE I1. PERRINE, 0F GLADSTONE, OREGON.
summon.
Application filed December 30, 1919. Serial No. 345,272.
To all. whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE L. PERRINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gladstone, in the county of Clackamas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in furnaces, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified wherein a central grate is provided and a fuel support encircling the grate, together with means for supplying air at the grate and to the combustion chamber above the grate, by means of an air dome, to equalize the pressure above the grate and to provide for a perfect combustion of the fuel.
In the drawing is shown a vertical section through the improved furnace.
In the present embodiment of the invention the improved furnace comprises a casing 2 having a stack 1, and an annular airtight imperforate fuel support 1s arranged intermediate the ends of the casing and nearer the bottom than the top, the said support being formed by an outwardly and upwardly extending annular web 14 upheld by standards 15 in the form of plates or strips out and bent from the web 14 and resting on the bottom of the furnace in concentric and spaced relation to the jacket or casing of the furnace.
A grate support 12 is arranged within these standards 15, and a grate 10, circular in cross section, rests upon the grate sup port. The grate consists of a frusto-conical body having vertical slots in its sides and is open at its lower end, the said grate being provided with top and bottom flanges as shown. The standards or supports of the grate support, as shown, depend from a ring having a shoulder on which the grate rests.
A conical cap 5 of frusto-conical form, is arranged above the grate, the said cap having a discharge pipe 4 in its top, and a peripherally flanged disc or saucer shaped plate 11 is arranged at the top of the grate within the cap, the plate depending into the space within the grate and forming the base of the air chamber thus produced.
A pipe 9 leads from within the grate support to the plate, opening at the center there of, and this pipe is the air inlet to the air chamber between the cap 5 and the plate 11, the pipe 1 being the outlet. The fuel support has a flange 16 at its outer edge which laps upon the inner iface of the casing,-and.-
there are blocks of flreclay or smooth castings 7 on the upper face of the support, as is common in the art.
In use, the fuel is placed upon the support and ignited at the grate: The air for combustion will enter through the grate in the center of the furnace, passing thence through the fuel to the side walls of the furnace, while the air entering through the pipe 9, air space and pipe 4 will be discharged into the combustion chamber above the fuel. The walls of the furnace will be thoroughly heated and in turn will pass the heat to the air of the place to be heated.
The furnace has a door opening 3 into the combustion chamber and another door opening 13 near the bottom, this being an ash pit door opening, and the space below the inlet and within the grate support provides an ash chamber.
I claim:
1. A grate comprising a support having spaced standards adapted to extend into the ash pit of a furnace or the like, said support being provided with a shoulder at the top, a
flanged grate seated on the support within said shoulder and having vertical slots in the same, disc-shaped plate mounted in the top of the grate and having a bottom opening, and air pipe extending from said opening into the bottom portion of the support for receiving air from the ash pit, a cap mounted on the flanged grate above the plate and sloping downwardly and outwardly, and forming a heating space therebeneath for the air, and an outlet at the top of the cap.
2. In a furnace, a casing, a grate support at the bottom of the casing and having spaced standards, a circular frusto-conical grate having top and bottom flanges, the bottom flange being mounted upon the support, said grate having vertically elongated slots therethrough, the upper flange extending outwardly, a saucer shaped plate having a peripheral flange at the top bearing upon the top flange of the grate and a central opening at the bottom, a pipefitted in said opening and extending downwardly and lat erally beneath the support for the grate, a conical cap mounted upon the top flange of the grate outwardly of the flange of the plate and having a central opening'at the apex, an outlet pipe fitted in said central opening, and an imperforate fuel support Patented May 16, 1922.
10 opening at the center thereof, an air pipe extending from said opening in the bottom portion of the support for receiving air from the ash pit, a dome-like cap mounted on the grate said grate, plate and cap forming an air space confined thereby and into which said pipe leads and an outlet pipe at the top of the cap and leading upwardly from the center thereof, a short distance.
GEORGE L. PER-RINE.
