1,415, 15 Specification of Letters Patent. P t t May 9 1922 Application filed April 23, 1920. Serial No. 376,119.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Black Lick, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in doors especially adaptable for employment on buildings or sheds and has for its primary object the provision of means which will prevent jammlng or dragging of the door when opening and closing and sold at a caused by ice and snow drifts banking against said door.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a ground engaging section hinged to the lower edge of the door and provided with means for .'aising and lowering the same, thus providing a construction which will entirely close the doorway when said door is in a closed position and when desiring to open the door, said section may be conveniently raised to permit free swing ing of the door.
A further object of this invention is the provisionof a door of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and ellicient, and which may be manufactured comparatively low cost.
\Vith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel. features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my i.uveution, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing. in which Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating a door constructed. in accordance with my invention and. swung on a door frame,
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same,
Figure 3 is a rear elevation illustrating the door.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a door frame adapted to form a part of a building or shed and to define a doorway which is partially closed by a door 2 that is secured to the door frame by hinges The lower edge of the door is spaced from the lower end of the frame 1 and said space is closed by a section or strip 4 which is secured to the lower edge of the door by hinges 5 and said strip when in a plane with the door engages the lower end of the door frame to completely close the doorway. A flexible element 6 is secured to each side of the section a and passes through an opening 7 in the door, provid ing a construction which will permit raising and lowering of the section 4 from either side of the door and also providing means whereby the door can be conveniently opened and. closed when ice or snow is banked against the door frame 1 as by raising the section 4, the door then may swing over the snow without jamming or dragging thereon.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim is A. device of the character set forth comprising a door proper mounted for swinging movement in a doorframe and having its lower end spaced from the lower end of the doorframe to permit the door to swing freely when foreign matter extends above the lower end of the frame, a closure strip hinged to the lower edge of the door and when in one position adapted to close the space between the lower edge of the door and the frame, and a flexible element having its ends secured to opposite faces of the strip and passing freely through the door to permit the raising and lowering of the strip from either side of the door.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE W. EALY.
Witnesses LEON CLOTTS, GEORGE EALY.
