Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BURGY, OF POWHATAN POINT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIIMNEV-COWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. llLlll, dated August 5, 1873; application filed- May 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BURGY, of Powhatan Point, in the county of Belmont and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Caps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this speeiiicatiomin which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to prevent interference with the draft of a chimney by the action of the wind; and it consists in the combination of the hinged coupled doors with the box or pipe employed for inclosin g the upper end of the chimney, and with the detlecting wings secured to said box, and the cover or cap over the top of said pipe, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a metal pipe or box, having, preferably, a rectangular form, and provided at its upper open end with a conical cap or cover, B, between which and said pipe is left a sufficient space to permit of the escape of smoke. Suitable angle-irons O, attached to the sides andnear the lower end of the pipe A, project horizontally outward, and when said pipe is in place rest upon the upper end of the chimney, and furnish bearings or supports for the device. Within each face of the pipe A is provided an opening, D, which is inclosed bygmeans of a door, E, that is hinged at its upper end to or upon said pipe immediately above said opening, said door being arranged so as to permit its lower end to swing outward. The lower ends of opposite doors E are connected to gether by means of a rod, F, in such a manner as to cause one of the same to open as the opposite door is closed. A wing, Gr, secured radially and vertically to the pipe A, midway between each pair of doors completes the device, the operation of which is as follows:
When the Wind is blowing from any direction the door or doors upon the corresponding side are automatically closed, and those upon the opposite side or sides opened, so as to permit the smoke to pass freely outward in such direction without being in any manner accelerated or retarded by the action of the currents of air. The wings protect the openings not directly in a line with the course of the wind, and. prevent air from entering the same, as would otherwise be the case. The cap B prevents downward currents of air from entering the pipe, while Ya like result is obtained by hinging the doors E at their upper ends. Upward currents of air are permitted to pass freely into said doors, as the draft of the chimney is not thereby effected.
It will be seen that the horizontal shape of the pipe A does not affect the operation ofthe device, the same result being produced by the employment of a pipe having a round, square, triagular, or other form, provided the doors are made to conform thereto, are coupled together in pairs, and are separated by wings, as shown.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and Witnesses:
