Description

B. P. HAYES.
, KEY. AFPLICATION FILED APR. 13, 1921-- UNHTED STATES smear @FFHCE.
BENJAMIN P. HAYES, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
KEY.
1 All ,(l2-9.
Application filed April 13,
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keys; and I do declare the, following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to keys for digitally operated machines, and particularly to keys for use in connection with calculating ma chines.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple construction of key, the parts of which can be expeditiously assembled to provide a complete unitary structure.
It is also the object of the invention to inexpensively construct the key by a novel means of assembling the key button and the post.
For convenience in description, I shall divide the key into two main parts; the key post, and the button to the secured thereto. The particularly novel features of my invention will be apparent from reference to the following description in'connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a key constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a disassociated view of the several parts.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the key pad, the post being shown in elevation.
ig. 4: is a sectional view through the key button showing .the ferrule and card and pad in place preparatory to crimping the ferrule and card to the pad.
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the ferrule and card.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view through the completed key.
The key post 1 may consist of a strip of material of appropriate configuration, depending upon the purpose for which it is to be used. At the upper end of the post, however, there is a restricted projection 2 which. constitutes a rivet head whereby the key pad 3 may be secured to the post. The key pad is shown as consisting of a disk slightly concave at its upper face and provided with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 461,132.
a slot 4 to receive the projection 2 which may extend through the slot and be peened over to provide a head 5, (see Fig. 3). The disk or pad 3 is provided with a depending peripheral flange 6 to receive the cup-shaped ferrule 7, the inner diameter of which is approximately equal to'the outer diameter of the pad. The ferrule or cap 7 is of transparent material;' for example, celluloid, and within the ferrule is a card which may partake of the shape of the. ferrule or cap, and which is provided with appropriate indicia, such as a number or letter, visible through the top of the ferrule or cap 7. Thg card 8 may be of paper or other appropriate material, and the card and ferrule are assembled as shown in Fig. 2. The ferrule is shown in Fig. 4 with its flange 9 extending below the flange or bead 6 of the pad 3, it being apparent that the card is provided with an.apron or flange 10, which also extends below the flange 6, although in some instances, the apron or flange 10 may be omitted and the card may be simply a disk. tice, however, I prefer to arrange the parts as shown, so there will be a uniform appearance. As the ferrule and card are placed upon the pad 3, the ,extended edges may be crimped under the edge of the flange 6 and within its perimeter as shown at 11, (Fig. 5). The next operation will be the assembling of the cup. The cup 12 is semispherical, and is provided with a curved, elongated slot 13 through which the post 1 may extend so that the upper edge 14 of the cup may be forced against the face of the pad 3 and so that the edge portion or perimeter 15 of the cup may peen against the crimping edge of the ferrule or cap 7 and hold it in place as shown in'Fig. 6.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the key can be readily constructed and that it will be expeditiously assembled. The only machine operation after the parts are formed will be the riveting or peening of the projection 2 to form the head 5. Thus the cost of the key will be materially reduced.

3. A key comprising a post having a eonstrieted projection at one end, a pad comprising a disk provided with a slot and having a dependine, periplrial flange, a rivet head on the poet projeetiont'or holding the pad to the post, a ferrule and a card seated on the pad and having depending flanges oi greater width than that of the pad flange and erimped under the edge of the pad flange.
