To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM R. WOOD- \VARD, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of: Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to'rnats of the link type; that is, mats which consist of links of such materials as leather,-fibre, felt, metal and the like, these links being connected to.- gether to form a mat of the'required shape and dimensions. The invention is especially concerned with the edgeconstruction of such mats where-it is necessary to make bias cuts, curves, critouts, and the like,'as'for.instance, where the mat is to fit around' a post or against an angular wall. It has been customary heretofore in makingnia'ts' of i this character to make a bias cut, curve, cut-out, or the like by steppingthe sections along the edge where this special construction is required. Itis obvious that the 'pintle wires in these stepped sections cannot be manipulated in the sameway that they are in the regular or straight sided sections ofthe, mat I I and it has been the practice therefore to put a burr or washer. at the end of thepintle wire of each stepped section and head this This construct-ion is obje'etionable in that it detracts fromthe workmanlike appearance of the mat, and more par ticularly because the burrv or washer'is liable tobe knocked off or worn off and thus release the segments in the section held by this particular wire. It is, therefore, the
chief object of this inventionto devise a construction that will overcome these ditfi- Figure 1 is a perspective vlew of a small part of the leather mat showing the construction embodying the present invention; and v Fig. 2 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1. a I 1 The body portion of the inat shown is built in the usual manner and consists of sections 1921. seriainb. 471,267.;

leather, fibre orany-su'iitable material. The a drawing shows only three sections designated respectively :at 3,1 4 and 5, it being understood, however, that as "many sections as desired may be used and-thatthese sections may be ma de' ofany d'esiredlength. The adga'cent 'sections'aresecured together by; pintle wires or rodsand these wires not only perform thefunction of securingrthe links of zone -section. -to'-ithose of the next adacent section, buta'lso that of-bind-ingzthe segments-of each section; together.. In the 1 construction shown the "sections'fia and I 4 2are secured, together by' the pintle wirei6m-The sectionset: and 5' are similarlyconnectedlby 1 one leg 7- ofanother wire, and the'section '5, 11s connected to its-"neXt'adjacent 'sectionjby F the other'leg 8 of this wire.- At the time the.

holding one end of 'the section; anda'fter the ends of the legs 7 and 8 are bent toward are connected by-a' sleeve or-clip 10. It will be observed that the small section of the mat shown has astraight left-hand" edge and a stepped orgbias cut right-hand,
'U-forr'n,l the bridge-portion 9 of. 'thiswireff 7' edge. That is, the right hand edge of the j similarly stepped with reference-to the section 4. r I
As .above stated, ithasbeen usual heretofore to use washers 'or burrs at the ends of the pintlewiresfi'and 12, respectively, of these stepped sections 4 and 3. According ,to the present invention, however, each of section 4 is steppedtoward'the left with'fre: V
gard to the section 5,. andv the."section'3fis these wires is bent at right angles across the about the next adjacent wire.
of lies across the face of theendmost segment 2 in the sectiont, and the end portion of the part 113 has a hook 'or loop 1 1 formed therein which receives the pintle wire 7.
end of the stepped section and is hooked That is, the
' pintle wire 6is bent so that a part 13 there- The pintlewire 12 of the section 3 has a bent portion15 and a hook 16 curved about the pintle wire 6, these parts corresponding to the parts 13 and 14 of the pintle wire 6.
At the opposite edge of the mat the ends of 5 pintle wires of these sections preferably are -I desire to claim as new is:
the pintle wires 6 and 12 are bent toward eachother and the bent ends are connected by a clip 17 in exactly the same way that'the wires 7 and 8 are secured together at this edge of the mat.
In assembling the stepped sections, the
bent, as indicated at 13 and l5,,and these parts are slipped'on to the pintle wires to which they are to beconnected at the proper point in the assembling of the segments 2. The operations at the opposite edge of the mat in this construction, therefore, are exactly like those of the straight edged or standardmats. g
It will now be appreciated by those skilled in this art that this invention provides a stepped edge construction for mate of this 11. A mat-of the character prising a series of link sections, pintle wires holding said sections together, said mat in.-
cluding a sectionjstepped with reference to an adjacent section, and a connection at the 30 end of the stepped section securing the pintle described, comwire of the stepped section to the pintle wire of the next adjacentsection'; 7 2. A mat of the character described, comprising a series oflink sections, pintle wires holding said "sections together, said matin eluding one or more sections steppedwith reference to an adjacent section, the pintle wire at the end of the stepped sectionror sec- .tions'being unitedto the wireof the next adjacent section. 1
j 3. A mat of the character described, cornprising a series of link sections, pintle wires holding'said section's together, said rnat including one or more sections steppedwvitli reference to an adjacent section, and a connection at the end of each stepped section additional to the links of said section securing the pintle Wire of the latter section to the pintle wire of the next adjacent section.
4. A matof the character described, coniprising a series of link sections, pintle wires holding said sections together, said mat ineluding a section stepped with reference to an adjacent section, the pintle-wire of the stepped section being bent at substantially right angles across'the' end of said stepped section andhooked about the wire of the next adjacent section.
