' srranrnnme DEVICE non Lawn ivrownns.
Application filled. 11115 25, 1921. Serial no. 487,367.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE It. CUDLIPP, a
subject of Great Britain, residing at Les Angeles, in the county of LosAngeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devlces Y are rigidly secured in the frames of the devices, with the result that when the devices are used on mower blades that are'slightly irregular from usage or previous sharpening operations, said devices become jammed and will not ride freely from one end of the blade to the other. It isthe purpose of my invention to overcome the objectionable results just noted and to do this I propose to mount the file or abrasive member in a pivoted frame that may swing through a horizontal plane permitting said file or abrasive member to ride freely over the. blades and rapidly and efficiently perform the sharpening operations. 7 s
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a lawn mower sharpening device of my improved construction. 7
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. v V
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder for the file or abrasive member and showing by dotted lines the positions into which said holder may-swing.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, 10 designates a horizontally disposed bar from one end of which depends a leg 11 and adjustably arranged on said leg is a bracket 12 that is locked in its adjusted position by a set screw 13. I
Projecting outwardly from bracket 12 is an inverted V-shaped bearing member 14 that is adapted to slide along a transverse member of the lawn mower frame or the main axle thereof and thereby firmly guide the device while in operation.
Positioned on top of bar 10 is a transversely disposed plate 15, from the ends of which depend L-shaped hooks 16 and retained by the latter is a short file or abrasive member 17. Screw seated in the center of plate 15 is 'a set screw 18 having a pointed end 19 that is adapted to bear directly on top of bar 10, thereby securing or anchoring the plate and abrasive member to the bar and. at the same time permitting said plate and abrasive member to swing in a horizontal plane with the point 19 of screw 18 as an axis and consequently enabling the abrasive member to follow the curvature of the edge of the lawn mower blade and not bind thereupon during the sharpening operations.
In the operation of the device thebearing member it after being adjusted to proper position on leg 11 is placed on a transverse rod or axle of the lawn mower, after which, plate 15 is adjusted on arm 10 so that the under face of abrasive member 17 may be applied to the edge of oneof the mower blades. chor the plate at the proper position on the bar 10 and the entire device is now moved across the mower, thereby causing the abrasive member to ride lengthwise over the mower blade so as to grind away the surface thereof and produce a sharp cutting ture, capable of being easily and cheaply produced and is very effective in use. 7
Obviously the construction of the device may be modified or varied slightly without departing from the spirit of my invention,
' the scope of which is setforth in the appended claim. V
I clalm as my invention V r In a device for sharpening-lawn mowers,
5 abar, a plate overlying said bar; means fer securing said plate to said. bar so that said plate may swing in a plane parallel wijuh GEORGE R}, (JUDpiPP.
