' Be it known that I, IIARRY Ennwoon SLOAN, a citizen ot'the United States, residing at Pitman, county of Camdemand State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Circular- Saw Sharpener, of which. the following is a specification. I
This invention generally stated, relates toa saw-filling device and has more especial relation to a portable device of this character for sharpening circular-saws of varying diameter.
The leadingobject of the present invention may be said to reside in the provision of a circular-saw sharpener of simple, etiicient and portable design, capable oi attachment to a bench, table or wall; which may be clamped in a vise or'capable of standing upon feet furnished for the purpose. A further object is to provide a freerunning iile-carriarge, pivotally supported, the tileholder of which may be shifted to cant transverselythe file for securing various angles. A still further object is to provide means for securing varying depths of file-cuts in an efficient and convenient manner. Provision is also made for taking care of varying sizes of arbor holes as occur in difl'erent makes of circular-sews. Other and further objects not at this time appearing will be set forth hereinafter. Q
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one formthcreof which is at present preferred by me, since, thesame has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to. be under- 1923. Serial No. 653,430.
stood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my in gated web 12, the end pieces projecting forwardly from said web as best seen in 3. The end pieces are each provided with at corresponding portions with a vertical line of holes 13, said holes being in register, horizontally considered, to adjustably accommodate a saw-carrier in the form of a shaftlt for rotatably receiving a circularsaw 15. For illustrative purposes a saw of small diameter is shown. Saws of larger diameter may be accommodated by shifting shaft i i to openings 13in a lower plane. The saw-carrier may be secured to a bench, table or wall, the web 12 being provided with bolt or receiving openings 16 for the purpose. If desired feet 17 may be furnished with the saw-carrier so that the device may be positioned upon a bench or table without clamping means, or if desired the device may be held between the jaws of a'bench-vise. The device is thus portable and convenient for use under varying conditions. The saw-carrier is of substantial structure, as cast iron. \Vith reference now to the file-carriage and its complemental tile-holder it is to be noted that the former has pivotal relation with respect to and is movable endwise with relation to the sawcarrier and that the latter (file-holder) is tiltable laterally of the holder. The filecarriage comprises an elongated plate 18 having extensions 18--18 at the ends thereof and has fixed relation with an endwise movable rod 1.9, best seen in Fig. 2, which rod is afforded longitudinal movement through openings in end-pieces 1.011 and also is capable of movement about its longitudinal axis sothat the file-carriage may be aii ordcd pivotal as well as a sliding i'i'iovement. In order to provide a freerunning movement for said carriage, the under side thereofis calculated to track upon a roller 20, best seen in Fig. 2. The roller 20, is journaled in a vertically adjustable slide 21 mounted in end-piece 11 of the saw-carrier. It is adjustable by means of set screw 22 and lock-nut 23 so that the file-holder 24, ca-ried by said filecarriage, may be moved toward or away from the teeth of saw 15, by reason of pivotal connection of the carriage. The file-holder 2 1 is movably supported between part-s 1S and 18" of the file-carriage. At each end the file-holder is provided with a screw-threaded socket extended longitudinally of the holder. At one end a bolt 25 is passed through extension 18 to cooperatively engage in said socket and at its other end the screw-threaded portion of a handle 26 is passed through extension 18 to cooperatively engage the other of said sockets. Thus by loosening of bolt 25 and handle 26 the file-holder 2% may be moved about its longitudinal axis to tilt or cant a file 27 transversely to cut a desired pitch of saw tooth. The file-holder is designed to accommodate conventional or stock types of files and the latter may be secured to the underside of the holder by means of conventional clamps 28 of which two are usual- 1y employed. In order to prevent chattering and afford a backing or support for a saw immediately below the file, I employ a gauge 29 provided with an adjustable stop in the form of a set-scew 29. The stop parallels the file holder and the inner face of saw 15 is adapted to abut against said stop, as shown in Fig. 1 during a saw sharpening period. The gauge is provided with a slotted arm 30 adjustable with respect to end-piece 11 of the saw-holder by means of a set-screw 31. Thus by adjusting the gauge to proper position, circular-saws of varying size may be accommodated. To accurately adjust the file-holder to secure desired depth of file cut, adjustment of side 21 is ell'ected to raise or lower the free end of file-carriage about its pivot connection. It will be noted in the connection that slide 21 carrying roller 20 has connected between it and end-piece 11, a coiled spring The slide is thus under spring tension during periods of adjustment. With a saw, the carriage, file and gauge in proper posi' tion as clearly shown in Fig. 1, reciprocation of the carriage by means of handle 26 causes the file 27 to remove the necessary amount of metal from a tooth of the saw to sharpen same. lVhile the operator employs one hand for moving the carriage he uses his other hand in rotation of saw 15 upon shaft- 14: so that each and every tooth may be sharpened without further adjustment oi parts. Unskilled persons may eliiciently sharpen saws by the use of the present device. Rod 19 is provided with stops and 3st to limit forward and rearward movement of the file carriage. These stops are made of fibre in order to soften the impact of file-carriage with the saw-holder.
Provision is necessary, with respect to saw-carrier 14:, to take care of diiierent sizes of arbor openings in circular saws. In Fig. 4, the end. of saw-carrier l-l supported in end-piece 11 is shown as having a collar which in connection with collar 36 (see Fig. functions to prevent end-wise movement of the saw-carrier 141-. Projected from said collar 35 is a short section of shaft designated 37 for receiving saws having small arbor openings. A washer 88 is then fitted over the part 37 and a screw 38 secured to place to clamp saw between said washer and collar. It a saw having a larger arbor opening is used one of the interchangeable bushings 39, shown in Fig. 5, is fitted over the end 37 of shaft 14L and a saw fitted to the flanged part 40 of said bushings. The washer 38 and screw 38 are then titted to place so that in this instance the saw is clamped between the bushing surface and said washer.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A device of the character stated com prising a stationary saw-holder including an elongated, horizontally disposed web sup porting apair of end pieces, a horizontally disposed shaft supported in said end pieces, a. file-carriage having pivotal relation with the saw-holder and capable of reciprocating movement along said saw-holder and means for detachably securing a file to said carriage.
2. A device of the character stated comprising an elongated, stationary saw-holder for rotatably accommodating a circularsaw, a file-carriage having pivotal relation with the saw-holder and capable of reciprocating movement along said saw-holder, a roller interposed between said holder and carriage upon which the unsupported portion of said carriage travels and means for detachably securing av file to said carriage.
3. A device as described in claim 2, characterized by means for adjusting said roller toward or away from said carriage.
t. A device as described in claim 2, characterized by a slide under spring tension verticallymovable with respect to the sawholder to which slide said rolleris secured.
5. A device of the character stated comprising an elongated, stationary saw-holder for rotatably accommodating a circularsaw, a saw carried b said holder, a file-carriage pivoted to said holder, a file-holder, a file secured thereto, means foradjusting the free end of said carriage toward said sawholder and a gauge adjustably carried by said saw-holder against which the inner face of said saw abuts.
6. A device as described in claim 5, characterized by means for moving the file-hold er about its longitudinal axis.
7. A device of the character stated comprising a longitudinal web terminating at each end in a laterally disposed extension each apertured to receive a saw-holder, a saw-holder comprising a fixed shaft carried by said extensions one of which is shaped and proportioned to accommodate circularsaws having varying arbor openings and means for clamping a saw with respect to said shaft.
8. A device as described in claim 7, characterized by interchangeable bushings for attachment upon said shaft to receive saws having varying arbor openings.
9. A device of the character stated comprising a stationary saw-holder including an elongated, horizontally disposed web sup porting a pair of end pieces, a horizontally disposed shaft supported in said end pieces; a file-carriage having'pivotal relation with the saw-holder and capable of reciprocating movement along said saw-holder, a roller interposed between said holder and carriage upon which the unsupported portion of said carriage travels, and means for detachably securing a file to said carriage.
10. A device of the character stated comprising a stationary saw-holder including an elongated, horizontally disposed web sup porting a pair of end pieces, a horizontally disposed shaft supported in said end pieces, a file-carriage having pivotal relation with the sawholder and capable of reciprocating movement along said saw-holder, a roller interposed between said holder and carriage upon which the unsupported portion of said carriage travels, a slide mounted upon one of said end pieces for supporting said roller, and means for detachably securing a file to said carriage.
11. A device of the character stated com prising a stationary saw-holder including an elongated, horizontally disposed web supporting a pair of end pieces, a horizontally disposed shaft supported in said end pieces, a file-carriage having pivotal relation with the saw-holder and capable of reciprocating movement along said saw-holder, a roller interposed between said holder and carriage upon which the unsupported portion of said carriage travels, a slide mounted upon one of said end pieces for supporting said roller, means for vertically adjusting said slide, and means for detachably securing a file to said carriage.
