Application' mea April e,
To all nic/0in t may concern Be it known that I, EARL W. KnYsnR, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Wheeling, county of Ohio, and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Cuticle Sticks, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a manicuring implement, and more particularly to a cuticle stick or broach. y
Vrl`he primary object of the invention is t0 provide a cuticle stick having one end of wedge-shape adapted for introduction beneath the cuticle in a manner usual to such devices, and provided at a point slightly rearward of said end with one or more annular grooves designed for the reception of twisted or twirled-together fibers of an absorbent cotton wrapping applied to said end, whereby said wrapping isretainedin place.
lt may here be explained that, as ordinarily used, asm'all wad ofabsorbent cotton is applied to the end of the stick in the form of a loose wrapping and the same is then dippedin a liquid cleansing solution or antiseptic wash, ordinarily contained in a narrow neck bottle, after which'it is applied to the cuticle. However, since no means has been provided whereby such wrapping is secured in place, it frequently happens that the wrapping slips from the stick and is lost in the bottle. .its hereinbefore indicated, it is the aim of the present invention to obviate the objectionable feature of former sticks, just referred to, by providing means'for positively retaining the cotton wrapping in place.
ln describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which- YFigure l is a plan view of the invention;
Figure 2 is an' edge view of the same;
Figure 3 is a view of the beveled end portion of the stick showing a cotton wrapping applied thereto, and- L Figure et is a view illustrating` a modification of the invention.
Referring to said drawings@ indicates the body of the stick, which is preferably of cylindrical form in cross section. One end of said body may have the usual tapered Specification of Letters Patent. i* Patented Arpt. 18, 1922- 1921. serial `No. 458,883.
point 2, or it may have other preferred shape. The opposite end of the stick has a head 3 of oppositely beveled wedge or chiselllike form presenting a sharp terminal edge.
In the preferred construction, a reduced neck portion 4 is formed intermediate said head and said body by the provision of an annular channel or groove 5. Said neck is preferably ofv gradually tapered form and terminates at said head, which latter presents an lannular rearwardly-facing shoulder 6. Said groove 5 is designed for the reception of the loose ends of the bers of a cotton wrapping or swab 7 which is slipped over the head 3, said ends being drawn into said groove by a turning or twisting movement of the hand. So applied, the portion of the wrapping interengaged with the annular vshoulder 6 effectively guards against chance detachment` of the wrapping. y
`Instead of the single channel or groove 5 of the form mentioned, a plurality of closely adjacent shallow grooves 5a, as illust-rated in Fig. 4,-may be provided, the same being designed to'hav'e fibers of the cotton wrapping drawn thereinto by a turning Or twisting movement for Ybinding such wrapping in place.
i i TWhat is claimed isl. A' 'cuticle stick comprising a body,y and al chisel-like head at one end of said body, a reduced neck of tapered form being provided intermediate said head and said body,
said head presenting a rearwardly-facingv abrupt shoulder adapted to be engaged by.
EARL W. KEYsER.
