UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
THOMAS remit nus'rnen, or wnmme'roiv, NEW ZEALA FASTENER AND RETAINER FOR CASEMEN'I S, DOOBS, THE LIKE.
dows, Doors, andthe likeg'and I do hereby I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for retaining windows and doors at any desired position, and also to provide a cheaper and more compact device which willat the same time be readily extensible, andtheretore, form a better stay when the door or window is only slightly open, and which will, when. desired, be detachable.
According hereto on the window or door post isinounted a slottedrocking shaft or the likein. which one-end of the stay is suitably mounted, the other end being pivoted to a rocking shaft orthe like on" the window sash or door. The stay may be in single part. or in two or more extensible A locking latch maybe mounted upon the pin by which the stay is attached-to the rockingshaft upon the sash. Convenient means are providedby which the stay can be maintained at any desired position on the slotted rocking shaft thereby enabling the windows to be retained at any desired position. A countersunk holeis provided on the slotted rocking shaft by which the stay maybe inade detachable and other countersunk holes may be provided at certainset positions to be an additional security agalnst slipping.

Figure 8, is a sectional viewon lineB-B, Figure 6. 1
Figure 9, is an elevation of a modified form of fastener.
Figure 10, is a side-view of Figure 9.
Figure 11 is a sectional view-showing the manner in which the shoe can. be clasped over the rocking shaft.
In the drawings, the rockingshaft 1 is slotted at 2 and'is loosely mounted on brackets 3 and 41 attached to the frame 5 of the window. The stay 6 is provided at one end with a hook 7 (see Figures 1 and P) by which it maybe hooked upon a screw-pin 8 passing through the saidrocking shaft and provided with ahead 9 adapted to be fastenedby the screw-pinS into a countersunk hole 10 in the stay 61sec particularly Figures '2 and 3). A knurled or milled nut 11 is threaded upon the screw-pin 8-to control the head in the countersunkhole 10 and V to enable the stay togbe retained at any desired position with regard to the slot 2 upon which the stay slides. The object of the said countersunk hole 10 (see Figures 1 2 and 3) is to retain the stay securely when the milled nut 11 is but slightly, unscrewed.
By unscrewing the milled nut 11 the head 9 can bev pushed out of the countersunk hole 10 and the stay hook may belifted oil" the screwpin 8 and gthe window may thus be opened to the full extent independently or" the stay. p i
Another rocking shaft is mounted in brackets 13and Men the window 15, and in such rocking'shaft is pivoted at 16 one end i of the extension 17 of the stay 6. A locking latch '18 is also mounted on the pivot 16 and provided with a lifting knob or handle 19 for operating the latch the hooked portion 20 of which looks over the bracket In Figure 3 is shown a sectional view of the milled nut 11 which ismounted upon the screw-pin 8 of which the portion 21passing through the outer shoe 22 and theinnershoe 23 is. squaredylhe outer shoe 22 provides a suitable bearing surface for the end of the stay 6, while the inner shoe 23 actsasa steadyingdevicefor thesscrewpin 8,. and thereby presents a larger braking surface when the milled. nut 11 is tightenedr The stay 6 being provided with an extension 17 enables the said stay to be shorter and more compact and when set at the shorter length affords a better stay when the window 15 opened a slight distance onl The exten sion17 may be dovetailed in t e stay 6; The extension 17 is controlled by the milled nut 24 upon a screw-pin 25 which is referably squared when it passes through t e slot 26 in the extension 17 (see Fimires 1 and 2). The said pin may be provided with a head 27 and may be fitted in a countersunk hole in the back of the stay 6. The milled nut 24 when tightly screwed will, at the end of its extension 28, bear against the extension 17 of the stay 6. y
The body of the rocking shaft 1 ma be made U shaped in section as indicate in Figure 3, in which case it may be readily stamped out of sheet-metal, the end of course being rounded to fit in the brackets 3 and 4. The rocking shaft 12 may be similarly constructed and, if desired, the other parts may also be made of sheet-metal. The end of the bracket 3 at 29 is rounded or bevelled to enable the hook 20 of the latch 18 to trip over it readily when the window is being closed.
i It will be noticed on referring to Figure 1 that the pivoted end of the latch is partially rounded, the square portion 30 being left in order to prevent the latch from fallin below the osition indicated in the drawings.
' The roc ing shaft 12 together with the lows brackets 13 and 14 may be encased in a sheetmetal tray 31- if desiredfto enable it to be readily fitted in position.
-: The operation of the device is as fol- Referring to Figures 1 and 2, in which the window is shown closed, the latch 18 is lifted from the bracket 3 and the milled nut 11 being loosened the end of the stay 6, together with the shoes 22 and 23, and screw-pin 8 and the milled nut 11 will slide along the slot 2 by means of the in 8 in the rocking shaft 1 when 'the'win ow ispressed outwards, as indicated more particularly in Figure 5. When the window is thus opened it may be retained atany desired position by securing the milled nut 11 against the outer face of the rocking shaft 1( When the pin 8 reaches the opposite end of the slot 2 if it is desired to open the window further, the extensible sliding portion 49 of the stay 6 is brought into use by releasing the milled nut 24 until the extension 17 is brought to its maximum, when the milled nut is tightened (see Figure 4), and the window is thereby locked.
y A modified form of the invention isfiillusftrated in Figures 6, 7 and 8,"-in which the i i i fstaymay be retained at a horizontal or approximately horizontal position when the window is but slightly opened, thereby affording a'better stay. In this form of the invention the slot 26 of the extensible portion 17 of the stay 6 is made open at the end 32 that projects into the room and another nut '11 is partially unscrewed and the head 9 released from the countersunk hole 10, the
stay 6 may be slided into the position shown in Figure 6 and may be held in position by the milled nut 11, as before. In this case 1t may be desirableto provide means whereby themere lifting of the head 9 out of the countersunk hole 10 will not entirely un fasten the stay 6 from the rocking shaft 1, and with this object feet or projections 34 are provided which project from the end of the stay 6. By further unscrewin the milled nut 11, soas to enable the head 9 to clear the feet 34, the stay may be detached and the window opened to its maximum distance, independently of the stay.
If desired, the fastener may be constructed in the form shown in Figures 9 and 10 which case both the stay and the fastener may be made straight. In this case the rocking shaft 35 is located underneath the stay 36 which is provided with an extension 37 as indicated in Figure 10. The end of the stay 6 or of the extension 37 is pivoted at 38 to a hinged piece 39 which takes the place of the similar rocking shaft 12 shown in sion 37in the same manner as previously,
and the latch 40 is also provided with a stop to prevent it from falling'below the position shown in'Fig'ure 9. The shoe 43 is placed over the rocking shaft 45 and the rocking shaft maybe provided with a flange 44' upon which the shoe is turned over at 45 indicated in Figures 9 to 11.
As shown in Figures 9 and 10 the nut 46 threaded upon the pin 47 controls the movement'of the stay 37 in a similar manner to the nut 11 shown in Figures 1 to 6, the pin 47 being squared at the portion 48 shown by crossed lines in order to prevent the pin from turning.
