To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. OSTERLOH,
a citizen of the United States, residing atbooks, papers and the like.
It is the principal object of the present in- ,vention to provide a device of simple construction and operation by which -books, periodicals and loose papers may be rapidly andpermanently bound together and firmly held in their bound positions.
- The present invention contemplates the use of a pair of telescoping members adapted to pass through perforations in the artlcles to be bound and being further equipped with interlocking means by which the two members will be held in inseparable relation to eachother after they have been properly telescoped.
The invention is illustrated'by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the binding structure as applied to a plurality of pamphlets or periodicals, which articles are indicated by dotted lines.
'Fig. 2 is a view in section and elevation illustrating the male member of the binding structure.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View in elevation further illustrating the construct-ion shown in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10'indicates the female member of the clamping device and 11 indicates the male member. The member 10 is in the shape of a tubular sleeve of considerable length. One end of this sleeve is enlarged to form a flanged head 12 by which the articles to be bound are prevented from being removed. The opposite end of the sleeve is opened and receives pointed end 13 of the member 11. By referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that a plurality of perforations are formed throughout the length of the sleeve and in rows extending longitudinally thereof. These perforations are adapted to be engaged by lock fingers 14 carried by the polnt of the male member 11. tudinal slot 16 in the end 13 of the male member. The bend of this U-shaped spring is fixed at the point of the member 11 while the body portions of the spring are concealed within the slot. The outer ends, however, of this spring turn outwardly and at a slight angle to the longitudinal axis to the pin, thus formin barbs adapted to project through the perfiirations 17 in the sleeve 10 and to revent the male member 11 from being withdrawn from the sleeve. Retaining band 18 is disposed around the point 13 in a manner to prevent excessive yielding movement of the barbs 14 and to thus insure that these members will be held rigidly in their locking positions.
In operation of the present invention the articles to be bound may be suitably erforated and thereafter strung onto the emale member 11 of the fastening device. In the event that the aggregate thickness of the papers to be bound is greater than the length of the member-10, the male member 11 may be passed through the articles supplementing the length of the member 10. It will be understood that an enlarged head 12 is formed upon the end of'the male member opposite the point 13 and that the articles to-be bound will be retained in position by the heads 12 upon the members 10 and 11. The binding operation may then be completed by inserting the point 13 into the open end of the member 10 and causing the members 10 and 11 to telescope relative to each other. During this action the locking barbs 14 will yieldab-ly pass into the perforations 17 throughout the length of the sleeve and will be successively locked in position so that the male and female cannot be separated. The telescoping action is continued until the articles are held together with a desired pressure, after which the two members will be locked in relation to each other and cannot be separated. 7
It will thus be seen that by means of the simple and inexpensive device here disclosed, books, pamphlets and papersmay be permanently bound and rigidly held relative to each other.
While I have shown the'preferred form of my invention as now known to me it will be understood that various changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirlt of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A binder for books and the like comprising a tubular member having a plurality of perforations throughout its length and being formed with a head at one end thereof, a pin member having a head at one end thereof and ada ted to be inserted within the tubular mem r and yieldable barbs carried" on the sides of the point of said pin to register with perforations in the tubular member and to lock said pin and tubular member against separation.
2. A device for binding a plurality of pam hlets or the like together, comprising a tubu ar member having a head at one end, the opposite end being open, and having a plurality of perforations along opposite sides, a second member slidable within the tubular member and having a head formed on one end thereof, a tapered entering end,
and a U-shaped spring member secured to the tapered end and forming flared barbs engageab-le with the perforations of the first named member to lock the two members together.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a tubular member having an en;
larged head at one end, the other end being open, a plurality of perforations formed along opposite sides of said member, a pin member having a head formed at one end, the other end being longitudinally slotted, a U-shaped spring member fixed within said slot, the extremities of said spring member forming flared barbs adapted to engage the perforations in the tubular member when the pin member is inserted therein and prevent separation of the two members.
