W. D. BARTON.
ICE HOLDING DEVICE.
APPLICA'HON FILED MAY 28. 1921.

WARREN D. BAR-TON, 0F WACO, TEXAS.
ICE-HOLDEN DEVIGE.
i ,aroaes.
Application filed May 28 T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVAnnnN D. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to devices for holding ice upon running-boards of vehicles.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is hingedly connected to the running-board of a vehicle and which embodies a prong which may either be shifted so it extends upwardly to engage in a cake of ice to be held on the running-board, or shifted downwardly so that it is concealed and out of the way when not in use,
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and cheap to manufacture in order that the same may be rendered practicable for use.- 7
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character embodying a plate having means whereby it may be hingedly connected to the running-board of a vehicle, said plate being provided with a prong which, through the hinged connection of the plate to the running-board, may either be directed upwardly or downwardly through the running-board, as desired.
ther objects and advantages of the in vent-ion will become apparent throughout the course of the following description,
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure l is a perspective view showingan ice holding device constructed in accordance with my invention applied to the runningboard of a vehicle;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectionalview through the ice holder and running-board; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the ice holder in the operative position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the running-board 10 of the vehicle is shown as provided with an elongated slot 11. Secured to the upper surface of the Specification of Letters Patent.
iatented Mar. 21, 1922.
, 1921. Serial No. 73,265.
running-board 10 is a plate 12 having, an elongated slot 13 coinciding with the slot 11 of the running-board. To this plate, as at 14:, is hingedly connected a second plate 15 having extending outwardly from that surface thereof which engages the plate 12, a sharpened member 16, which is secured to the plate 15 by means of riveting or the like.
It will be obvious that by shifting the plate 15 about the pivot thereof the prong or piercing member 16 may be directed uppermost so that it will provide a holding means for a cake of ice, the elongation of the slots 11 and 13 permitting passage of the prong durin shifting of the plate. l Vhen, however, it is desired to secrete the prong, the plates are arranged in the position shown in Figure 2, and, as clearly disclosed in this figure, the prong 16 is so arranged that it can cause no damage to persons entering or leaving the vehicle. It will furthermore be obvious that the construction as hereinbefore set forth permits of permanent attachment of the ice holding member to the vehicle running-board and accordingly insures against a loss thereof which commonly occurs where some small device, which is detachable, is
employed for holding ice upon the runningboard.
Many changes being possible in the shape, size and arrangement of the various parts of the device as hereinbefore disclosed without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not limit myself to the specific structure thereof except as herein after claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a device for, holding ice upon the running-boards of vehicles, a plate connected to the running-board and shiftable to oppose opposite faces thereof to the running-board, and a retaining spike extending outwardly from one of sald faces.
2. In a device for holding ice upon the running-boards of vehicles, a combination with a vehicle having an opening formed therein, of a plate pivotally connected to the running-board of the vehicle and having a spike extending outwardly from one face thereof, said plate being shiftable about the pivot point thereof to position said spike within the opening of the running-board.
3. The combination with a running-board having an opening formed therein, of a plate likewise having an opening formed therein secured to the running-hoard and having the openmgthereof coinciding with the openlng of the running-hoard, a second plate pivot ally connected to the first named plate and provided upon What is the face thereof opposing the first named plate when the plates are in folded relation with an outstanding spike, said spike, when the plates are infolded relation, extending through the opening of the first named plate an d of the runningboard.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature.
WARREN D. BARTON.
