UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
FOLDING CHAIR INTERCHANGEABLE non USE AS CHAIR on BACK-SUPPORT.
Application filed June 29,
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that JAMES ARTHUR BELL, a
I subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Eddington Street, North Rockhanipton, State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in FoldingChairs Interchangeable for Use as Chairs or Back Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a folding chair which can be used as such, or can be altered when required to use as a legless chair such as forplacing on forms or benches to constitute a back support. A special feature in the present invention is that the parts are constructed and adjusted so that the article can be used with or without legs at option. It is also readily portable and can be folded up in very small space. In its normal state thearticle made according to the present invention is a complete chair. To use as a back support on any form or in any fiat situation it is only necessary to throw the legs back or to take them off.
The invention comprises a portable folding chair composed of metal side plates and cross plate and metal bent rods and a textile or other flexible seat and back also adapted to have parts adjusted or temporarily removed whereby the seat and back may be employed on a bench or on a fiat surface.
In order-to explain clearly the invention and how it is constructed, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a general view' of the invention;
Figure 2 shows the complete chair folded;
Fi ire 3 is a side view of member D show- 111 disengaged for folding;
igures 4. to 8 illustrate different members detached.
The chair is constituted by seven parts of metal and one part of textile or other flexible material. It is supported upon two spreading or foldable foot parts A B. These are engageable with two flat plates C D approximately vertical or sloping slightly backwards. The latter engage a ain with a cross plate E. The plates E and C D are adapted to carry or engage with a seat frame G, and back frame H. All these parts are made in proportionate relative sizes either for ordinary or larger or smaller chairs.
There are no screws or detachable parts other than the above. The manner of fixture Specification of Letters Patent.

and operation of the relative members is as foll.owsThe feet A B rest against or upon the longer back and front portions and are prevented from spreading by the bent ends J K, which form a stop one against the other. I
The seat frame G has its Sides bent upwardly as at L H and bent inwards at N O. The parts N 0 pass through holes R provided for the purpose in C D and E.
The back frame is arranged to rest at approximately a right angle to the plane of seat frame, but inclining slightly backwards. The ends of the back frame are bent outwards as at P and engage'in slot P in C and D. The result is that the ends of the seat frame and the back frame lock each other.
Any suitable textile or flexible materials are used for the chair seat, for example woven w re may be adopted in which case the whole structure is uninflammable.
In order to use the chair as a back support or as on a bench or the like, or in any flat situatlon, it is only necessary to throw the legs back or take them off, which mav be easily done and they can be replaced wheii required.
I claim 1. {X collapsible chair comprising in combination, a pair of vertical supports, a U- shaped frame member having terminal portions disposed at substantially right angles to the leg portion thereof, a U-shaped cross member having its legs pivotally connected to said terminal portions and said terminal portions also being pivotally connected to the vertical support, a second U-shaped frame member having similar terminal por tions extending in opposite directions to the terminal portions of the first named U- shaped member, and also having its terminal portions pivotally connected to the vertical supports and the legs of the U-shaped cross member, said U-shaped frame members being adapted to be folded and the terminal portions thereof adapted for locking these frame members against unfolding movement beyond a predetermined degree, and a flexible sheeting connecting the bridge portions of said U-shaped members.
2. A collapsible chair comprising a pair of vertical supports, a U-shaped frame member having terminal portions extendin at substantially right angles to the leg portions thereof, a cross member having its ends pivotally connected to the terminal portions of said U-shaped frame member said terminal portions of the U-shaped frame member being pivotally and detachably connected to the vertical supports, a second U-shaped frame member having terminal portionssimilar to the first named frame member but extending in opposite :directions,
and said terminal portions being pivot-ally connected with the vertical supports and adapted forenga-ging the leg portions of the first named U-shaped member for lin'iiting the unfolding movement thereof, While the terminal portions of the first named U- shaped member are adapted for engaging the leg p'ortionslof the last named U-shaped' member for limiting the unfolding move- 7 ment thereof, and a flexible strip connecting members.
3. .A-collaps ble chair frame, comprlsmg a the bridge portions ofsaid U-shaped frame pair of vertical supports, a U-shaped frame 7 member having its terminal end portions bent inwardly-and the vertical supports having elongated slots through which the ter minal end portions of, the'U-shaped frame member extend, a U-shaped cross member extending between the vertical supports and having its leg portions pivotally connected to the inwardly bent terminal end portions of the frame member, a second U-shaped frame member having its terminal end por-'
