Be it known that I, SIGMOND HANDLER. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Seats, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to adjustable and folding seats, such as are used in automobiles and the like, or as camp stools, and has for its principal object to provide an article of the kind mentioned, which is capa ble of being folded up into a small and compact form, so as to occupy little space in storage and to be easily carried from one place to another, to be easily and quickly unfolded, and .to be adjustable in several different heights or positions, and which shall also be of light weight but of sufliciently strong construction to support such strain as is liable to be applied to the same.

The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as hereinafter set forth in the claims hereof, one embodiment of the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the chair in its lowest operative position;

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the chair in a somewhat higher position;

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the chair in its highest position;

Fig. 4 is a front View, on an enlarged scale, of the chair, showing it in the same position as'in Fig. 2;

Fig. 5 is a side view of the chair showing the same folded up into its smallest form; and

Fig. 6 is a detail View, which will be hereinafter more particularly referred to.

In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiment thereof which I have selected for the purpose of illustration in the accompanying drawings and description in this specification, I provide a chair which when in either of its extended or operative positions, is automatically locked against accidental closing, and which is therefore perfectly secure, even when a heavy weight is placed upon the seat of the same, and which nevertheless requires but a few simple movements to fold the same into its compact or inoperative position.

In the construction of my invention in this selected form or embodiment, I provide a base .frame of rectangular form, designated 11, having on each side, near the rear, a stop 12. At the front corners of the frame are pivotally secured legs 13, which when thechair 1s in use extend upward and backward for supporting the rear part of the chair seat. Resting on the frame, but not secured thereto, are legs 20, one at each side, which extend upward and forward for supporting the front part of the chair seat.

The seat of the chair comprises a frame 25 of rectangular form, bearing a cushion 26. The frame'is provided on each side with a notch 27.

The upper ends of the legs 13 are pivotally secured to the frame 25 by means of togg e levers l5 and 16, and the upper ends of the legs 20 are pivotally secured to the frame 25 by links 22. The legs] 13 and 20 on each side are pivotally secured together near their middle at 21.

The back of the chair comprises a frame 30, a cushion 31, and a pair of downwardly extending members 32, each of which has a forwardly projecting toe at its lower end, which engages under the seat frame 25 when the chair is opened up. The members 32 are pivotally secured at 34 to a pair of L- shaped members 33 on the seat frame 25.

The operation of my invention will be readily seen from an inspection of the drawings. It will be observed that in the opened up position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the lower ends of the legs 20 are prevented from slipping backward by the stop 12, while in the position shown in Fig. 3, in which the ends of the legs are brought nearer together for the purpose of making the seat higher, the legs are held in position by theengagement of the upper ends of the legs 13 with the notch 27 in the seat frame. The operation and function of the links 15, 16, and 22, will be readily seen from an examination of the views shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

The advantages of my invention will be obvious from what has been above said with regard to its construction and operation.

I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications of the same may be made without departing. from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Havin thus described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:

1. A device of the character described, comprising in combination a seat, a back pivotally secured to said seat, means adapted to maintain said back in upright position when in use, a pair of legs adapted to support one part of said seat, a second pair of legs adapted to support another part of said seat, a leg of one pair being crossed over a leg of the other pair and pivotally secu ed thereto, the upper ends of one pair of said legs bein swingingly connected with said seat, an a pair of toggle-levers,

each having one end swingingly connected to the upper end of one of the other pair of said legs and the other end swingingly connected to said'seat.

2. A device of the character described, comprising in combination a seat, a back pivotally secured to said seat, means adapted to maintain said back in upright position y when in use, a pair of legs adapted to support one part of said seat, a second pair of le sa id seat, a leg of one pair being crossed s adapted to support another part of over a leg of the other pair and pivotally secured'thereto, a pair of links swlngingly connected to the upper ends of one pair of said legs and to said seat, and a pair of toggle-levers swingingly connected to the upper ends of the other pair of said legs and to said seat.

3. A device of the character described, comprising in combination a seat, a back pivotally secured to said seat, means adapted to maintain said back in upright 'position when in use, a base frame, a palr of le s pivotally secured to said base frame and a apted to support a part of said seat, toggle levers on each side adapted to pivotally secure the upper ends of said legs to said seat, a pair of stops on said base frame, a pair of legs adapted to engage with said stops and to support another portion of said seat, a pair of links, one on each side, adapted to pivotally secure the upper ends of said second pair of legs to said seat, a leg of one .pair bemg crossed over and pivotally secured to a leg of the other pair, and a notch .on the underside of said seat adapted to enga e the upper end of one of said legs.
