IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUND HI'NGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,930, dated July 15, 1873; application filed May 6, 1873.

To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY LoTH, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Gompound Hinge, of which the following is a speciiication:

The object of my invention is a compound hinge, of simple and economical construction, suitable for various purposes, but adapted especially for connecting together the several parts of afolding table, stool, or clothes-horse; and I accomplish this object by constructing the hinge in the manner best observed in the perspective view, Figure 1, of the accompanying drawing, which will be fully described hereafter.

The hinge consists of three sections, b, c,

and d, each of the outermost of which has a single' circular projection, h, at one end, while the intermediate section c has two circular projections, h1 and h2, connected to the projections h of the outermost sections by pins or rivets i, in tbennanne'r plainly shown in Fig. 1, so as to turn freely thereon.

The operation of the hinge will be best understood by supposing it to be applied to a table having three legs, to the upper edges of which the three sections of one hinge are secured, as plainly shown in the plan views, and a precisely similar hinge, A', is secured to the under edges of the said legs, as shown in Fig. 4, the two compound hinges thus serving to secure the whole of the legs together, and enabling them at the same time to be A freely turned one upon the other to either of the two positions shown in the drawing, the

connections being of great strength and not liable to get out of order, as, owing to their positions, they are subjected to comparatively little strain.

If the table has four legs, the hinge is enlarged by providing it with another intermediate section, e, precisely similar to the section c, as shown in Fig. 5; and, in like manner, by forming the hinge in five sections, it can'be used for connecting the parts of a table having five legs.

As a further improvement, and to avoid multiplication of parts, I propose to hinge a leaf, K, to the section d of the hinge, and to connect the folding top of the table or stool to this leaf. (See Figs. l, 2, and 3.)

I claim as my inventionl 1. The within-described compound hinge, consisting of three or more connected sections, b, c, Ste., the intermediate section or sections being constructed with two circular projections, and the outermost sections with one, f and the surfaces of all the sections being onv the same plane, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with the outermost section d of the hinge, of a hinged leaf, 7c, for the purposey specified.
