Description

W: A. ROWE.
LAVATORY.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 1. 1921.
Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
WALTER A, ROWE, 03:" TIFFILN, OHIO.
LAVATORY.
Application filed November 7, 1921.
1 *0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVAL'rER A. ROWE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Titlin, Seneca- County, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Lavatories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to lavatories, and more particularly to a novel and improved form of lavatory of vitreous or ceramic material.
The chief object of the invention is to provide a lavatory in which the ordinary form of overflow, in the production of which much care and skill are required, is wholly dispensed with and a substitute means for accommodating the overflow from the basin is employed.
A further object is to provide a lavatory of a double-basin typeembodying a formation which makes provision for adequate self support of the structure both during the drying to'which the same is subjected when in the 'reen clay, or plastic, state or condition and during firing, thus not only dispensing with the use oi? the usual props but also eliminating in large measure losses due to drawing and warping of the structure.
Other objects oi? the invention will hereinafter be explained or made apparent.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an under side elevation of the invention as it appears when resting in firing position, and- Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the invention.
Referringto said drawings, 1 indicates the basin, 2 the slab or face, 3 the dcpending apron or curtain, and t the upright back of: a lavatory, said parts having forms which are more or less common to lavatories of the general character to which the invention pertains. v
A second basin 5, hereinafter termed a cat h-basin is formed integral with and. depends from the curtain 3, t 1e same being disposed in underlying approximately parallel relation. to the basin 1 and the slab 2 and sep arated from the last named parts by a shallow chamber 6. An outlet opening 7 in the bottom of the catch-basin 5 is preteral'ily located in vertical alinement with the usual drain or waste outlet 8 and is designed for the reception of the end of a waste pipe. An
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. r, was. Serial No. 513,261.
overflow opening 9 is provided in the upper rear side of the main basin 1-, the same providing for the overflow of water directlv to the chamber 6. u
'lhe catch basin 5 has a central reaiwvardlv extending hollow arm which is designed to serve as a support during the drying and nring drawing and warping is largely prevented. Said hollow arm is of approximately rectangular form and comprises a relativelynarrow flat panel 10 extending rearwardly from theocntral lowermost portion of the catch bas n and located in substantially the same horizontal plane as said portion; substantlally vertical side walls 11 rising from the lateral edges of said panel 10 tothe Walls of said catch-basin; and a vertical paneL like wall 12 rising from the rear end of said panel 10 to the rear side portion or wall of the curtain 3, said wall 12 having its outer face in the same plane with the rear face of the back 4 and the corresponding face of said rear side portion or wall of the curtain.
In the drying and firing operations it has been the practice toseat lavatories on their backs and to dispose props in underlying supporting;- relation to the bowls or. basins thereof. However the use of such prop is unsatisfactory because it does not constitute a sufficiently stable support for the heavy overhanging basin to prevent sagging;- and warping under the influence ofthc high firing temperatures in which the lavatory and prop-the latter composed of the same muterial as the lavatory-ere naturally subject to considerable shrinkage.
The hollow arm of the present invention constitutes an integral support whereby the lavatory is braced and the catch-basin is adequately supported in both the drying and firing operations, the lavatory being dis posed in the furnace in the seated position shown in Fig. l in which its baclr and the panel-like wall 12 of said arm rest fiat upon. a horizontal surface. 7
To provide for maintaining the relatively spaced relation between the inaiu basin 1 and the catch basin 5, and also for lending additional support to the bottom portion of the main basin during firing, a plurality of posts 413- is preferably interposed between said basins at suitable points, two such posts, disposed on opposite sides of the waste outlet 8, being shown in the drawings. Said posts are introduced in the form of green processes whereby distortion due to.
rivets, in the molding or shaping operation, being inserted through holes let punched therefor in the bottom of the catclrbasin. Said posts are made of such lengtlrthat, with their inner ends firmly seated in underlying relation to the main basin, their outer ends are flush with the under surface of the catch-basin. i
A marked advantage resulting from the formation of the lavatory with the catclr basin, instead of the usual stuck-on overflow, is that the overflow chamber is of such large capacity that the danger of clogging, or obstruction to free flow of overliow water, is practically eliminated, whereas the small restricted passages of stuck-on overflows are very liable to become clogged. v
The double-basin construction is produced by the method generally known as single casting, and the back 4: by the method known as double casting. It will be understood, however, that the back may be omitted if desired. In such case the rear wall of the curtain 3 and the wall 12 constitute the seating port-ions oi the structure in the drying and firing periods.
What is claimed is 7 1. A lavatory consisting of a one-piece casting comprising a main or upper basin, a horizontal slab surrounding the upper part of said basin, a curtain depending from said slab, and a lower or catch basin supported by said curtain in spaced underlying relation to said main basin, said catch basln having a hollow rearwardly extending a'rnl whereby it is supported during the firing of the lavatory. V
2. A lavatory consisting of a one-piece casting comprising a main or upper basin, a horizontal slab surrounding the upper part of said basin, a curtain depending from-said slab, and a lower or catch basin supported by said curtain in spaced underlying relation to said main basin, said catch basin having a hollow rearwardly extending arm whereby it is supported during the firing of the lavatory, said arm comprising a rearwardly extending panel located substantially in the plane of the lowermost portion of said catch basin, and an upright wall joining said panel to the rearlnost portion of said ourtain and located in the plane of thelatter.
3. A lavatory consisting of. a one-piece castingjcomprising a main or upper basin, a horizontal slab surrounding the upper part of said basin, a curtain depending from said slab, and a lower or catch basin supported in spaced. underlying relation to said main basin, said catch basin having a supporting arm with; a portion thereof occupying a common. vertical plane with the rear wall of said curtain and another portion extending horizontally from said vertical portion to the lower part of said catch basin.
4:. A lavatory consisting of a one-piece casting comprising a main or upper basin, a horizontal slab surrounding the upper part or said basin, a curtain depending from said slab, a lower or catch basin depending from said curtain in underlying relation to said main basin, and posts interposed between said basins, saidcatch basin having a hollow arm whereby it is supported during firing of the lavatory, said arm comprising a panel extending rearwardly from said the bottom portion of said catch basin, and anupright wall joining the rear end or said panel to the rear wall o1 the curtain and occupying the same plane with the latter.
