WI] Clayton ATTORNEY WITNESS:
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM EDGAR CLAYTON, 0F ALTOONA, KANSAS.
' IRIMING- ROD.
Application filed December 13, 1920.
T 0 all to ham it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLrAM E. CLAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Wilson and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Priming Rods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in priming devices for internal combustion engines and has for an object the provision of means whereby the air may be temporarily out ofi from the carburetor for the purpose of enriching the mixture to facilitate starting.
In the majority of carbureters and especially those used upon Ford automobile engines, the spring which holds the shutter of the air valve open is so located as to render it exceedingly diflicult to replace in the event of breakage or loss of tension and therefore requires considerable time and expense when it is necessary to repair the carbureter in this connection.
The present invention aims to overcome this disadvantage by placing the spring in a position where it may be readily accessible and at the same time increase its efficiency.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the figure shown repre sents an elevation of a carburetor with the invention applied thereto. 7
Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the carburetor which may be of any desired type is indicated at 10, while the stem of the air intake valve or shutter is shown at 11, the latter being equipped with the usual arm 12, to which is ordinarily secured a priming rod. This rod may extend over to the dash of the automobile so as to be within convenient reach when the driver is seated at the wheel, or may extend forward to the front of the hood so as to permit the engine to be primed when the latter is manually cranked.
The present invention is capable of use in Specification of Letters Patent.

either position and includes a priming rod 13 which may extend over to the dash or to the forward part of the hood, where it may be provided with a suitable operating knob or handle. Formed within the length of the rod 13 is an eye 14, while preferably surrounding the rod is a coiled spring 15; one end of this spring is secured to the eye 14, while the opposite end is secured to a convenient portion of the carbureter. This spring is designed to take the place of the usual air valve spring so as to normally hold the air valve 'or shutter open to admit air to the mixing chamber of the carburetor in the usual manner. These springs as heretofore constructed were subjected to considerable strain, in that they 1 were of relatively small size, so that they frequently became broken or weak, so that in order to have the carburetor properly function they must be replaced. This was a difiicult and tedious operation, so that the time and expense necessary for the replacing of this spring was unduly increased. By arranging the spring in the manner shown and described. the latter may be quickly and easily replaced and in addition. the use of a spring of su'fiicient size and resiliency is permitted, so that liability of breakage or loss of tension is materially reduced. I
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. I
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
In a carburetor, an air inlet, a valve for controlling the same, an operating rod for the valve, an eye formed in the rod and a spring surrounding the rodand having one end secured to the eye and its opposite end secured to the carburetor for holding the valve in open position.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
WILLIAM EDGAR CLAYTON.
