Description

J. S. BROWN. EXTENSION RAILROAD GAR,
PATENTED JAN. 15 1.856.
rrn srns FIOE.
JOSEPH S. BROWN, OF LOW'ELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
EXTENSION RAILROAD-CAR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. BROWN, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Extension-Car for Stores or Any other Purpose; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the manner of constructing and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation, with part of the side removed so as to show the inside arrangements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation before being extended. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same when extended. Fig. 4 denotes a section at A, B, of Fig. l.
The nature of my invention consists of an extension car hereafter described, the same being so constructed as to be extended sidewise so as to answer the purposes of a store or object desired.
To enable persons skilled in the art of car making to construct and fully carry out my invention, I will describe the same as follows.
I construct a car, an elevation of which is seen at Fig. 1, the trucks being of the irdinary kind will need no further description than a glance at the drawing. At A, A, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is shown the body or main part of the car the sides of which are movable sidewise by means of the racks B, and pinions O, and shafts D, see Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Under the bottom of the car, are placed two shafts D, D, Figs. 1 and twhich runlengthwise of the car, and on each of these shafts are placed two pinions that gear into the racks as seen at B Fig. 1. At one end of each of the said shafts D, I place a bevel gear seen at F Fig. 1 which gears into another of the same size seen at G Fig. 1. This is secured to the lower end of a perpendicular shaft which is shown at H Figs. 1 and 4:. On the top of this shaft I place another bevel gear seen at I Figs. 1 and 4 which gears into another of the same size on the horizontal shaft in the top of the car as seen at J Fig. 1. On this horizontal shaft are placed two pinions which gear into the racks B in the top of the car as seen Fig. 1. This perpendicular shaft H,
and the bevel gears on it are for the purpose of connecting the upper and lower horizontal shafts together so that they can be turned by one crank as seen at M, Figs. 1, and 2. The out ends of the said racks B are firmly attached to the sidesof the car, and they the racks at the top and bottom of the car as aforesaid slide in substantial guides which can be seen at L Fig. 1 at the top, and at the bottom of the car.
I design to have a portion of the floor on each side of the car the width of the extension attached to the side of the car by hinges, swing upward when the car is shut or moved together substantially as seen in section at N Fig. 4, and for a store I de sign to have the goods and shelves on one side of the car when it is in use, as seen at Fig. 1, and the counter to stand in the position as indicated in section at Fig. 4:, and the rest of the car to be occupied by customers.
According to the scale of the drawings a full sized car would be about sixty feet long and about twelve feet wide, which makes a very commodious store.
The light is introduced through the windows as seen at the end views of the drawing.
The whole top of the car should be covered with water proof substance especially the joints where it extends so as to be perfectly water tight whether it is extended or not.
To operate the extension part I place the crank 0, upon the end of the shaft P, by turning it the car will be extended or contracted as desired, both sides of the extension part of the car are alike so that one description answers for both.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is Extending the floor and sides of cars outward laterally, by means of the racks, and pinions, and other machinery connected to them, or otherwise, so as to give a larger area to the floor, and also enlarge the capacity of the car essentially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
JOSEPH S. BROWN.
