lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dampers or draftregulators for stoves, furnaces and like heat producing apparatus.
An object of 4the invention is to provide aV damper structure that will permit the products of combustionV to readily passup the chimney or stove pipe, and at the saine time will prevent the escape of, or hold back, fthe combustible gases which are liberated during the burning ror consumption of the fuel. These gases, as is well known, lcontain ele ments of combustion which are capable of increasing the thermal efliciency of the heating apparatus if ignited before passingor escaping up the chimney. In other words, these uncons'umed gases include elements which, 'when combined with the proper quantity of air, -will ignite, thus producing a flame, which thereby increases they thermal efficiency of the heating apparatus. In
order to bring about this increased eiiiciency the present improvement provides means for temporarily7 retaining or holding'these gases infthe combustion chamber until they are thoroughly consumed before permitting them to escape up the/stove pipe.
The present invention broadly considered comprises adamper construction in which a centrally disposed plate is provided and plates located on the oppositesides of the same to serve as a check or baffle to prevent the escape o f the combustible` gases `before they are thoroughly consumed. positely disposed plates also prevent any back or down draft from the chimney from counteracting the normal or upward flow of the products of combustion.
These and other objects of the invention will appear in the body of the specification and will be pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view, showing the stove pipe in section, the damper part, and the means for moving the same.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the mea-ns for attaching the spindlev or shaft to the'damper. i Fig. 'isa sectional View of Fig. 1 taken ona plane through the axisof the shaft. Fig". 4 is a. detail sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. i
` Fig. 5 is la view looking vfrom the left hand end of Fig. lshowingfthe hand'wheel means for opening the dam-per'. i Fig. 6 isa view `ofnlthe line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawing in detail 1 des" ignates .the usual stove pipe, 2 the centrally located plate of the damper having the usual 'opening 3 therethrough. 4 and 5 arei'the:
baiiie plates which are .locat-edon the opposite sides of the plate 2. These plates, as shown, are made solidyor free from opening of any kind. They are secured to the plate 2 by means of the integral post members 6, 7 8, and 9 ywhich are indicated on one side. of the plate 4 in plan viewin Fig. 1 and in elevational view in Fig. 3. These posts are understoodl to be cast integral. with Vthe plates 2, 4, and 5, yand areof such length as to provide a'suitable space between the plates, as indicated at'10 and 11. The diameters of the plates 4and fare smaller than that of the intermediate plate 2.
For the purpose of rotatably *supporting the damper, vspaced 'pivot or shaft 4'pins 12 and 13 are employed, which pins are formed with laterally projecting or wing parts, 14 and 15 which pass through the grooves or channels 16 and 17 (see Figs. 2'and 4) I` against the tension of the springs 18 and 19. l"Vhen the wing parts 14 and 15 pass ,out of the grooves or channelsl and17 the oper-v ator turns these pins through an" arcof C" permitting the wing parts to seat in the recesses 20 and 21, as shown in Fig. 4. The expansive force of the ysprings 18 and19 will' serve to retain the pins in this position,`
whereby when'th'epin or shaft 12 isv rot-ated by Vthehand wl1eel'22the 'damper'as a will be turned. As Lshown in Fig. 2"the plate 2 is formed with enlarged portion 2 in which the grooves or channels 16 and 17 are placed and in iwhichthe 'ishafti12'is located. 22 designates an opening to receive the end of the shaft 12. 23 is a recessed knob or stop member which is pinned to the shaft 13, as indicated at 24. The spring 19 is seated in the recess 23. 25 designates a plate which is Secured to the Stove pipe 1
