My invention relates to improvements in heaters and has as one of the prin-cipal objects thereof the provision of a heater equipped with a deflector unit arranged therein to provide additional wall areas and with said unit so constructed and arranged as to effect circulation of the heated air about said areas for heating the same to increase the heat radiated from the heater.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claim and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a heater having my invention applied thereto.

Figure 4 is a disassembled perspective view illustrating the heater and deflector unit.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on a line 5-45 of Figure 2.
In practising my invention, as illustrated in the drawing, I provide a heater I9 having a base section II provided therein with an ash pit I2 and over which is disposed a drum I3, the lower end of which constitutes a fire box I4 separated from the ash pit by means of a grate I5. The upper end of the wall defining the drum I3 is closed by a disk-like top I6 mounted thereon and fashioned with a circumferential flange I1 embracing the upper end of said drum. The top I6 is formed with a combined smoke Iand draft outlet connection I8, while the front of the heater I0 is provided with the usual fuel and ash doors I9. The drum is provided with an interior rel inforcing ring 29, the latter being disposed between the fire box I2 and combustion chamber ZI.
As illustrated in Figure 4 .of the drawing, the rear wall of the heater is formed with a lengthwise extending opening 22 disposed between the ring and the top I6 and through which eX- tends my novel form of deflector unit 23, the latter being disposed in the combustion chamber 2I. The deflector unit 23 comprises a shell like body 24 having its rear side open as at 25 and defined by side, upper and lower flanges 26, 21
and 23 respectively. The flanges 26 and 28 overlie and are disposed in appressed relation with the wall of the drum, adjacent the opening 2|, while rthe ange 21 is embraced by the flange I1 of the top I6. Suitable rivets or the like are employed to secure the anges 26 and 29 fixed to the drum.
The body 24 is provided with oppositely disposed side walls 29 inclining inwardly and upwardly with respect to the drum and with their upper ends defining a top wall 30 of a cuneiform conguration in plan as clearly illustrated in Figure 4. lIhe body is also fashioned with a bottom wall 3I likewise extending upwardly and inwardly with respect to the drumand having its front spaced from the top wall 30 by means of a pair of oblique front walls 32'integrally connected to said walls 29, 30 and 3|. It is to be noted that all of the walls of the unit 23 are maintained in spaced relation with respect to the drum to provide tortuous air passages therebetween whereby said walls are heated when hot air is circulated through said passages from said re box thereby increasing the heat radiated from the heater.
Without further elaboration the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and sub-combinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein -described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It `is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in various forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the sco'pe of the appended claim.
I claim:
In combination with a heater provided with an upright drum defining a combustion chamber therein and having a top closing the upper end of Isaid drum and formed with a draft opening adjacent the rear of said drum, said rear of said drum formed with an opening between the upper and lower ends of the drum and establishing communication between said chamber and the atmosphere; and a deflector unit closing said opening and disposed within said chamber in spaced relation with respect to said drum, said unit comprising a shell-like body fashioned with oppositely disposed side walls inclining inwardly and upwardly with respect to the drum, a top wall connected to said side walls, a bottom wall connected to said side walls and extending upwardly and inwardly with respect to said drum, a pair of oblique iront walls interposed between said top and bottom walls and connected to said side Walls, said side, bottom and front walls disposed 'in spatiality with the front and sides of 10 said drum to define a passage about said last mentioned walls and to effect circulation of hot air forwardly, upwardly and rearwardly about said unit and to said draft opening, said Walls coacting together to dene a heating chamber open to the atmosphere and disposed Within said rst mentioned chamber whereby to increase the heat radiated from said heater upon circulation of het air about said walls.
