Description
H. W. L. PELL.
DETACHABLE PULLEY.
APPLICATION FILED Auchal. I920.
1,408,138. ,Patented'Feb.'28,1922.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WILLIAM LEACH PELL, OF TONBRIDGE, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO SOUTH OF ENGLAND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY COMPANY, LIMITED, 0F CHEAPSIDE, LON- non, ENGLAND.
DETACHABLE PULLEY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
Application filed August 31, 1920. Serial No. 407,193.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY VILLIAM 'LEACH PELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Tonbridge, in the county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Detachable Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in detachable pulleys of the kind in which the boss and the rim are split or divided and held together by bolts and nuts or annular connections and in which means are provided for enabling such pulleys to be used with shafts of different diameters, the said improved pulleys being intended for use on shafting for transmitting or receiving power through the medium of a flexible coupling such as a belt.
According to, my invention the aforesaid boss is made in the form of a divided block which is entirely separate from the divided rim and is attached to the latter through the intervention of two transverse parallel members one on each of the elements of the divided rim and provided with V or other suitably shaped edges engaging with corresponding recesses in the boss of the pulley, said transverse members being spaced apart on opposite sides of'the divided boss and situated at right angles to the line of divi sion of said divided boss and permitting the parts of the divided boss to be slidably adjusted along and between said transverse parallel members to suit shafts of different diameters.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved pulley shown connected to a shaft of comparatively small diameter.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan of Figure 1 taken along the line 11 thereof and,
Figure 3 is an elevation of the improved pulley shown connected to a shaft of comparatively large diameter.
A, A are the two portions of the divided block constituting the boss of the pulley. B is a central opening in the boss for the re ception of the shaft C. D, D are bolts which pass through holes d d inthe two portions of the divided block and serve clamp the said portions onto the shaft C. The said central opening B is provided with Cir inwardly projecting portions 6, 6 b
which are so shaped that, when the two portions of the divided block are clamped onto the shaft by the said bolts D, D they bear tangentially on the shaft C, as shown in the the pulley which is entirely separatefrom the said boss A, A is made in two portions E, E whose line of division lies at right angles to the line of division of the divided blockor boss, the said portions being secured together by means of transverse clamping bolts e passing through lugs e, e. The said rim portions E, E are provided with transverse members E E having V- shaped edges 6, e which, when the two rim portions are secured together, engage with correspondingly shaped recesses formed in the sides of the divided block and the transverse members then lie parallel to each other and permit the parts of the divided boss to be slidably adjusted along and between said transverse parallel members as aforesaid to suit shafts of different diameters. Marks or graduations 6 may be made on the edge of the transverse members E E for facilitating this adjustment.
By constructing and attaching the pulley to the shaft in the manner above described it is unnecessary to provide a separate bush for each diameter of shaft as previously proposed.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 2*- 1. A detachable pulley consisting in the combination of a divided boss, a divided rim separate from said boss, two substantially transverse parallel members one on each of the elements of the dividedrim, said members being spaced apart on opposite sides of the divided boss and situated at substantially right angles to the line of division of said divided boss, means for enabling the parts of the divided boss to be slidably adjusted along and between the said transverse parallel members to suit shafts of different diameters,
means for clamping said parts of the divided boss to the shaft after adjustment thereon and means for clamping said transverse parallel members to said boss after the rim has been centrally adjusted.
2. A detachable pulley consisting in the combination of a divided boss, a divided rim separate from said boss two substantially transverse parallel members one on each of the elements of the divided rim, said members being spaced apart on opposite sides of the divided boss andsituated at substantially right angles to the line of divisionot said boss, means for enabling the parts of the divided boss to be slidably adjusted along and between the said transverse parallel members to suit shafts of different diameters means for clamping said parts of the divided boss to the shaft after adjustment thereon; inwardly directed flanges at the joint of the divided rim and clamping bolts thereon.
3Q A detachable pulley consisting in the combination of a divided boss, a divided rim separate from said boss, two substantially transverse parallel members one oneach of the elements of the divided rim said members being spaced apart on opposite sides of the divided boss andsituated at substantially right angles to the line of division of said divided boss, means for enabling the parts-of the divided boss to be slidably adjusted alon and between the said transverse parallel members to suit shafts v0t different. diameters, bolts and nuts for clamping said parts of the divided boss to'the shaft after adjustment, inwardly directed flanges at the joint of "the divided rim and clamping bolts thereon. Y j
l. A detachable pulley consisting in the combination of a dlvided boss adivided rim separate from said boss, two substantially transverse parallel members one on each side of the elements of the divided rim, said members being spaced apart on opposite sides of the divided boss and situated at substantially right angles to the line of division of said divided boss, V shaped guides on said transverse members engaging with corresponding recesses in said divided boss, means for clamping said-parts of the divided boss to the shaft after adjustment thereon and means for clampingsaidtransverse parallel members to said boss after the rim has been centrally adjusted. i j I i 5; A detachable pulley consisting in the combination of a divided boss, projections on said boss directed inwardly towards the shaft and adapted to bear tangentially thereon, a divided rim separate from said boss, two substantially transverse parallel members one on :each of the elements of-the divided rim, said members being spaced apart on opposite sides of the divided boss andsituated at substantially right angles to the line of division of said divided boss, V shaped guides on said transverse members engaging with corresponding recesses insaid divided boss, clamping bolts and nutspassingv through the two parts of the divided 7 boss, inwardly directed flanges at the joint off'the divided rim and clamping bolts thereon.
